@Caue-Rego I like your first idea. Giving the user hints on how to keep their posts from being caught by the spam filter would be very useful.
However your second point is not a good idea. It only takes one url to a bad site to put corrupt cookies on the user's pc.
I think you were having trouble because during your first few hours as a new user the rules are more strict. In a few days it will get better.

Sure I was having trouble as a newbie but that's not something to be taken
so lightly. "oh, just a newb issue, let it burn it will heal".Also, more about the second idea, it seems to work just fine for discourse.
Maybe it doesn't use akismet, though, but something else

@cregox While comparing/contrasting NodeBB to other products can be healthy if the intention is to uplift the community or provide positive feedback/criticism; saying "NodeBB is doing it wrong because Discourse does it like this" is not really helpful for the community. Many forums implement a stricter ruleset on new users--it's a common trust system where respect is earned.
NodeBB is open source, and if you are not happy with it's current iteration feel free to fork it and change it to fit your personal needs. Or if you are pleased with Discourse and prefer the direction their developers have taken, it too is open source.
But the two products are very different--yes they solve the same issue but with very different personalities. I started with Discourse, ran a forum on it for a while, had lots of backend troubles and spam issues..finally moved to NodeBB and I've been happy with it. Do I miss things from Discourse? Sometimes. But I can't complain knowing that I have access to the source code and can change anything I want.
And if you are not technically inclined, I assume if you hosted your forum through NodeBB.org their development team would be more than happy to tweak your forum until it suits your personal needs.

Well we (or at least I promise I do!) take UX problems seriously. Just please post on our GH tracker, and we will look into it as always
I know this is a plugin, but it's bundled with core so therefore we should care and make sure it works as best as it can.

@psychobunny Mandrill isn't, actually. Maybe it was for a time, but we reversed that some time ago I guess!
In any case, while we still have a free plan on Mandrill, new users don't (since they changed their pricing last), so this pretty much means I no longer want to offer Mandrill as the official mail plugin.
Perhaps I'll look into adding this into Sendgrid...
-
@julian Oh, thanks for making me aware. I've never noticed that Mandrill stopped offering free emails. I wish there was a better sollution for sending emails that was also partly free (Like Mandrills 12.000 free mails) & includes a inbox or 2.

Maybe this is yet another thing to learn from discourse... Sorry if I cite them a lot, but I really love the job being done there. And I find nodeBB, despite the bad name (fixating on technology), a very promising fork of it IMHO!
They gave up on using GitHub issue tracker in favor of using the forums. Quite a while ago.
( Trying to post what you read above, I couldn't again... Got flagged by akismet again! Something is really wrong there! Clearing up cookies didn't help, had to remove the link and edit it back. )

As is well known, and as you were told in another thread, NodeBB is not a fork of another forum, and it doesn't share technology stack with Discourse.

Aren't you a dev there? They list your avatar on their dev list.

For those who aren't aware, Discourse is built on Ruby on Rails. NodeBB is built on NodeJS. Totally different languages, platforms, architectures, etc.

No they donβt. You misread that page
-
@JaredBusch he misread a lot of things...
thanks for catching one!i would love to know how much things we all misread in this fashion, just plain wrong...
anyway, not only i'm not a dev there, i dropped it as a user because of jeff and all the disco censoring happening there.
it's all documented somewhere under the daily fuck (you must know this guys), and one day i'll write (and edit) more about it. cregox.net/discourse

Yeah, someone sent that to me and I didn't read it closely enough. I apologize.

That link still calls NodeBB a spin off from Discourse. It's a completely independent, unrelated forum. Direct competitors? Certainly. But in no way a spin off, fork, or the like.
-
@scottalanmiller from my memory, discourse was the first of its kind. from googling around 5 or 10 minutes, all i could find was a wikipedia saying discourse was released in 2013 and surprisingly nothing about nodebb there (thus taking me more than the few expected seconds to dig that info) and nowhere else could i find a quick reliable data point... github doesn't make it easy to find the first commit or even release. but using "before:2014" i found many things in 2013 and nothing before that.
it would be a very pleasant surprise to discover discourse wasn't the first!
but i don't care enough to dig deeper right now.
what's more important now, though: why isn't nodebb even on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software or the talk page??
could it be due to the terrible name?
-
@cregox Discourse was the first that really got the market going, mostly because they had money behind them. But I don't know that I'd call them first of any sort. They were a big improvement over say phpBB, but all of these forums are essentially bulletin board systems and while Discourse and NodeBB have some universally nice features, they aren't really new animals (new in 2013 at least) but just the current generation of something that's at least twenty years old (phpBB was 2000, and I was on forums like this in 1999.) Even Spiceworks, although not a publicly available platform, was Ruby on Rails and out in 2007 - and if I recall it forked someone else's code, but that I'm not sure of (it wasn't open so who knows.)
-
@scottalanmiller i think my email reply won't come through like it would've on discourse.
their great email integration and proposition of replacing mailing list was a first, for instance. and, it looks like, they're still quite unique about it.
it's a remarkable feature. much more than they themselves give credit for. because people still undervalue the importance of backup.
wait for a covid19 equivalent to hit the internet...

@baris thanks!
Wikipedia
Well then, first of all, I would like to point out that I've got nothing against Node.js nor NodeBB as some people like to claim here. I've been a Wikipedia ...
NodeBB Community (community.nodebb.org)
this does clear it up a lot.
but it's still from 2016!
no updates since then?!
so fringe...
