- Doom series - so many hours went into this when it came out. We dragged our computers around to do mini-LAN parties and made maps. Doom 2 was the killer in he series but the original Doom had a lot of great maps.
- Quake series - talk about a breakthrough in the FPS genre. I stuck with only playing with my keyboard for a long time but now my mates and I had to relearn FPSes. The three first proper games were all great. Q1 broke the rules. Q2 brought excellent single-player. Q3 set the golden standard for deathmatch.
- Super Mario Bros I wore out NES gamepads. SMB2 was really just a rebrand but it was fun for a game starved kid like myself. SMB3 was one of the best and most advanced games for the NES. Hell, I have a Wii and WiiU just to have recent Mario games.
- Witcher 2 I started playing the first Witcher game when Witcher 2 came out because I like continuity. W1 was pretty good. Gameplay was so-and-so but the story was excellent. Finished that off and was gobsmacked by W2. I've played most important RPGs since there were computerised RPGs (ASCII Ultima - check!) and nothing holds a candle to W2. Icewind Dale, Ultima (and Underworld), Elder Scrolls series and so on. Nothing managed to deliver a story that packed such a punch. I thought I had seen the most impressive games and newer graphics, easier content and shorter game time was the new norm. W2 really changed that. I could write a long essay on how good it was.
Last spot is undecided:
- Last Ninja Played the various releases soooo much. Still the best music ever made for a video game. I get goosebumps when I hear it. C64 was a shite console but some great games were made for it.
- World of Warcraft Sunk quite a lot of my adult gaming time into this. It's not so much WoW but the guild you get into. Downing bosses and having 39 and later on 24 similar idiots with you is pretty great.
- Dune 2 The original Dune was an odd RPG/strategy game, but Dune 2 made a genre. Was great!
- Homeworld Again being godsmacked. HW was fairly awful in MP but the story and the mood you had in SP just made you keep playing. I flunked an exam at the uni because of it IIRC.
There are probably others and I should have made a long list of honourable mentions but the list is long enough as it is.

My top 5.
Sensible World of Soccer (Amiga). Played this (in various incarnations) for over a decade, sadly until about 2005 when my Amiga croaked it. Great fun even now.
GTA V (Xbox One). Technically the best GTA game, though San Andreas had a better story and Vice City the best soundtrack, possibly of any game ever.
Monkey Island 1&2 - Amiga. Can't separate them, two of the most entertaining and hilarious games ever.
Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past (snes). Difficult to choose the best SNES title but kept coming back to Zelda 3. A rewarding and epic game everyone should play.
Halo 2 - (Xbox). I've not played any since (yet) but this was my favourite title on the original Xbox.

Hmmm alright, how does one make a list again in markdown? Ah! Got it! Well, since I'm quite young at the age of 19, my experience only goes as far as the Xbox/PS2 genre,
- Ori and the Blind Forest, I'm absolutely in love with this game, I love the music, story, gameplay, the intense feeling I got when I was playing trough the game was amazing I really bonded with the characters. And cant wait to replay it with a Steam Controller once I get mine in the mail.
- Garry's Mod, I quite have a history with Garry's Mod, I always enjoyed the roleplay gamemodes, and from one community shutting down from starting my own for 2 years I picked up community management up as a hobby. Amazing time, made allot of friends & enemy's back in that period. And I learned allot from all off that.
- League of Legends & Dota, ahh. Who ever played a Moba (Or Dota if you like to call it) will know the love/hate relation for those games, you have amazing games and you have games that you can throw your office chair out of the window. (Speaking from experience) And for the past 3 years I've been hooked on League of Legends, and Dota 2 from time to time.
- Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Pretty much the same as Ori and the Blind Forrest, but more with a hack & slash gameplay to it. Had a good 12 hours of fun out of it.

Water temple -_- every time I get that far I end up spending way too many hours trying to figure out how to beat that puzzle
@baris, something you really need to try, aside from FF7 of course (he isn't a console person)
EDIT: I've played most of the Zelda series, but I do recommend Link's Awakening for the gameboy. If you're a fan of Zelda, you need to play this. It will surprise you with its storyline!

@psychobunny heh yeah the water temple is probably my least favorite one. I'll have to try Link's Awakening! But first things first I need to obtain a gameboy..
