I don't think that commit has been released yet, which would explain why you'd still have the error. You could have just cherry-picked that commit you linked, but what you did works as well. It might just end up conflicting with future upgrades.
Trouble installing NodeBB
PitaJ Global Moderator Plugin & Theme Dev
If you don't have access with ssh you can't install NodeBB on it.
NodeBB is designed to work best under a virtual private server. Using a traditional hosting service is not recommended as they do not have the capabilities to power NodeBB effectively.
- The code and instructions can be found here at our project repository
- Full instructions can be found in our Documentation Portal
- We recommend DigitalOcean to host your NodeBB, you'll get a month free just by registering with this link. You can also try applying the 10TOSHIP coupon to get another two months free, and as an added bonus, you'll be helping us out too!
Thank you for your interest in NodeBB!

I don't have access to the OS, however I have access to the FTP information and
the GoDaddy details.
Typically any platform like that is an extremely limited PHP-only web server. NodeBB is neither PHP nor does it run on a web server. So beyond lacking the right languages, access, tooling, etc. it's fundamentally the wrong conceptual approach. It's not a CGI script to be installed on top of a web server, and that's what essentially all of those services are.
I recommend a vendor like Vultr and CentOS 8. Works great.
