I think unread will universally imply the first UNREAD post. The other links are more interesting questions.

Seeing the last read post would give familiarity to the topic.

this is the last post I read, so all posts below are unread

Compared to:

i don't recognise this post I've been taken to, is it random, or is this the first unread post, I'll scroll up until I find a post I recognise

... or, start loading from first unread. In most forums, threads tend to get very long, so not having to scroll through all the posts you have read (for the 10th time) would be extremely user friendly
