I was looking into trying to figure out server costs with an estimated number of people, but figured it would be best to get some real world data to compare it to! So if you don't mind I would love to hear about your server specs/setup and how many users that handles!

I don't think we have anything quite so fully featured at the moment, although the NodeBB team could always build it out for you We routinely accept commissions for third party plugins and such.

There's no magic forum you can build and have it be popular. You'd need either a forum about something, however chances are whatever you think of will be saturated with forums already (Bitcoin for example) or something brand new that no ones done, but it won't be long before someone else does. No plugin will make your site amazing. running forums is an uphill struggle. Someone will piss you off, you'll ban them, someone else will cry about user X being banned, rinse and repeat. Starting out as a new forum now is tough. Unless you've already got a large number of members and transferring to nodebb (even then, people hate change, and you'll no doubt get the token "developer" who preaches that anything that isn't built in php is rubbish). But again, you can't please everyone.

I believe @Nicolas has a number of gamification plugins that are quite helpful For the second question, you'll want to create or customise an existing theme so that the topic layout is vertical.

So pink, much wow. Would be nice to have an easy way to add these bootstrap skins to nodebb though. The bundled in ones look a bit dated.

@Bri it seems to be related to 2 critical settings for uploads, avatars have there own maximum size while profile headers use the maximum size for any upload that should go in posts

@Chad nope. Redis and MongoDB are not comparable with MySQL first ahead as both are NoSQL. Additionally they also use a different port than MySQL. So basically you can install and run them without any issues.
