oops) on the subject of our pricing. As some have surmised, we're charging the rate we charge because we love what we do, though we could charge more because we're three of a very small set of users who can easily work with the NodeBB code 
We also want to encourage more stuff, whether it be plugins, themes, or updates to the core, and so that's why we're encouraging all of our clients to open source plugins that they sponsor development for

I've spent long enough as a developer to know what's good and what's not. Who to work with an who not to etc,I really just sort of fell into it long ago. Ended up doing some consulting engagements to pay some bills and ended up liking the constant change. Ended up with an internal IT department that split away from its parent to become a consulting firm - first in software then in IT. Started in the US and have offices in the UK now too. Now I've been doing it for so long, it is hard to imagine much else

I would not recommend working with this person, he'll just decide that he doesn't need what you're working on anymore. While already working at a very, very low rate, even refuses to pay out a single penny for the work you've already put in it. Do not accept any work from him.

You're entitled to the money you've already quoted, whether they use the work or not. Would be interested to hear what @Jelena thinks about this, as it's her partner who requested the work. I too have helped them both out on their project, and for them to mess around a respected member of the community isn't right. I helped knowing I wasn't going to be paid. But for them to accept your terms and not pay because they don't need what you've done isn't right.
Did you have any form of contractual signage?
This needs addressing, if you've written off the payment, then that's your decision, but we need to do come up with a solution to this so it doesn't happen again. Either payment up front, or at the very minimum a deposit for the work to commence with the full amount due on completion before any work is handed over.

Sorry to hear about that. Definitely ask for an advance next time, you're a well-respected person here so there should be no reason why someone would distrust you
Was your work something that could be useful for the rest of the community (ex. plugin)? If it's something cool I wouldn't mind giving you a little something out of my own pocket for you to release it

I had an advancement, but since the price itself was very low the advancement wasn't that much either
the current work done on it would be worth more than the final amount.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not that mad about the money, since I considered this more of a "charity" project with a little payment. If I'd be building this for a large, serious party I could probably ask a whole lot more. Because I considered it to be a "charity" project I didn't bother writing up and signing any paper work.The point of this "review" was more to let other developers be cautious when agreeing to do some paid work for him.
To conclude, yes it's something the community can benefit from. It's a rework/extension on the WebRTC plugin. It'd be possible to create (private or public) rooms (from anywhere in NodeBB) which people could join. It'd support most of the experimental WebRTC stuff like Chrome screensharing etc. It'd also be easily extendible with new WebRTC functions.
Like I said, I'm not worried about the money, it's not like I really need it. I'll just put this project on hold and work on other stuff (poll plugin ;)).
