Okay this is ridiculous

So i decide to use nodebb, and the installation instructions were extremely confusing and not very organized.... There are tons of errors throughout the process and you don't even mention the need of a web server such as nginx....

And when i finally got nodebb to work, which was a nightmare to accomplish, it literally breaks in a matter of minutes of my jusy doing some basic things in the admin dashboard

Nodebb seriously has the worst mobile/tablet optimization i have ever seen in years, half of it's admin control panel features break it, and it's ridiculously hard to fix an issue with it as debugging is extremely hard.

Even the support is terrible, the people here don't seem to know what they're talking about, the forum here is very inactive with hardly any people on and getting proper support is almost impossible. A guy had the same issue as mine, and it's been 14 days since he created his thread and still not a single reply!!!! And the amount of times people keep throwing their digital ocean referral links in threads is just ridiculous.

Nodebb, get your stuff together.... You have just lost a user

(I don't care if this sounds rude to anyone or if you don't like what you just read, this is the reality and you'll have to accept it.)

    Bye.

  • GNU/Linux

It might have something to do with errors occurred during installation.

It's unfortunate you decided not to continue with NodeBB. However your expectation of immediate assistance (on a weekend, no doubt) needs to be checked.

    Here are some tips!

    • Don't use the latest branch if you want something stable!
    • Setup a dev and try the updates before production use.
    • NodeBB is free and Opensource. You can't simply complain on the support for something that is free man.
    • Learn nodejs and try to help out. There are a lot of things that we need help with.
    • If you need help and require support there is a simple way. Just pay for support. We have a lot of people here that are willing to help out for a small fee. (Me included, mostly have swedish customers but an exception can be made)

I agree with your point of view. Time is priceless, it is impossible to spend 24 hours to help others free of charge.

I was NOT expecting immediate support. I was discouraged due to a person having the same issue as mine and NO ONE, I mean literally NO ONE, replied to his post even tho it was posted more than 2 weeks ago. So please stop assuming things

I never used the latest branch, I never used nodebb for production.... and i can in fact complain about something that’s free. It’s your product and it’s your responsibility to make sure the people that use the product are not experiencing any issues or bugs with it. It is not my fault that nodebb and it’s support us free, if you were going to just keep asking people for money for something that would take you minutes to help out with, then you may as well make the entire software paid. It’s very selfish of you to keep asking for money for just something as simple as providing support, it’s like the user will keep paying nodebb money for nodebb’s own issues... see? It doesn’t make sense!

  • So me and @Apple-Pro moved on to flarum

No one asked you to spend 24 hours providing support.... a few minutes every now and then could really help people out.

@apple-pro wow man, talk about a rage quit.

You literally started posting four days ago. That is not nearly enough time to get any meaningful help.

Software development and support can be slow (unless you’re paying for it). It’s a fact of life.

Admittedly, the learning curve is on the high side compared to other software, but no one got better at life by doing only the easy things. That’s how you learn.

The tutorials are not hard to follow, but there is some basic developer knowledge you’d need to know, all of which is very easy to Google.

Hope you fare better in future endeavors

More than 4 days just for support!?!?!? That’s ridiculous to be honest! I’ve seen many other services/softwares that are FREE, and you get support in a matter of hours if not minutes. And you don’t even pay a dime.

  • Swedes

@Apple-Pro Where does it say that we have free support? Nowhere, thats why we don't have it. Note that you have the option to pay https://nodebb.org/pricing, its right there in plain site. If you support us you CAN complain. Otherwise NO!

BTW, it cost a lot to have support for a produkt. In my eyes i cant understand that this product is free at all and no money banners at all. I try to do my best to support the community even if it's not much. Nothing is free in life.

Complain is the last thing you do if something is free! Just state you point why this platform is not for you and move on with your life.

👍 For all the active developers in this community 🙂

  • LOL... this thread is funny. A computer illiterate person complaining about not having support on a free product. Try buying a 2nd-hand cisco switch and calling cisco to help set that up for you... good f*cking luck XD

How about I help you? for a fee of course... my field is IT, but I don't do it for free. Hence it is called a job, where people pay for my knowledge and expertise. I am not a developer though, so that is why I reserve those types of questions for them. However, I am learning to become a full stack developer... just for kicks.

OOOORRRRR.... learn how to use the OS first, before going on a pointless hissy-fit and hoping to get support from people. If it is about setting up nodebb as a service on linux... the instructions work. Unfortunately one will have to do the hard work (aka reading and following the instructions). A couple of modifications here and there (if you know what you are doing) and presto, it works beautifully. Haven't had it crash once... except for nginx... but I fixed that.

    *edit to add: https://community.nodebb.org/topic/10830/how-to-keep-nodebb-start-when-i-reboot-ubuntu16-04

took me 2 seconds to search it on this forum...

It seems your reading comprehension could use some work.

I didn’t say anything about having to wait four days for support, but that your first post on this forum was ~4 days ago.

Your first post has gotten responses relatively quickly despite being in the wee hours of the morning for HQ.

Calm down a little and maybe people would be more inclined to help you.

  • Community Rep

Yes but i didn't understand anything.....can you set it up for me please?

Just FYI this is not how you ask for help, either online or in real life. Show what you tried so far, and then come and ask.

Locking this thread -- I've seen @Apple-Pro say negative things about NodeBB and upping Flarum (nothing wrong with that, you're entitled to your opinions) a month ago on social media.

Now that this thread happened, I'm not sure if there's something a bit more dubious involved.

If you are still interested in using NodeBB, please feel free to open a new conversation about the steps you took and where you got stuck, and we'd be happy to help as soon as we can. Thanks.
