Interesting thread! I have been bouncing around looking for an interesting/fast/good option for my site at ne1up.com (between hosting right now) and liking what I see here. Discourse has been my other top option, followed by Vanilla.
Unfortunately the install is above my paygrade so I had thought about trying out the $20/mo package at DiscourseHosting, something I hate doing, but they're nice. So I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon NodeBB earlier. This seems faster, bit cleaner and less cumbersome to me in several ways.
I am curious, the reason I am leaning towards Vanilla right now - I have a home page (WordPress) where I post and I would like a corresponding post/thread to be created on my forum when I do that - and I would like the comments from the blog post go to the thread, and vice versa if possible.
Vanilla offers most of this functionality if not all - I am really unsure about Discourse - but what about NodeBB?
I don't mean to hijack, it's just something that for some of us might be useful, that WordPress integration and cross-posting.

WP integration is definitely on our TODO list, one of the first few things we plan on looking at after our initial major launch at the end of this year.
I hope that by the time we do launch, you'll think that NodeBB is the best solution for you

The simplest way to do this would be to have a NodeBB plugin periodically ping the wordpress RSS feed for new entries, and post new topics.
If you wanted a faster response rate (e.g. topic created right after the blog post is written), you'd need a wordpress plugin to ping NodeBB after the post is written.

Don't worry @quahfamili, we're very aware of their existence, and have been since day 1. In fact, the very reason we started NodeBB was because we felt that installing Discourse was too cumbersome of a process.
They have some nice design ideas, as do we, so whenever we see something that we like from Discourse, we try to see if we can incorporate our own version of it.
Found you thanks to openshift and got to this post after a topic on discourse. I've been with discourse for over 1 year, trying to port my forums to that apparently awesome openshift free tier.
Right off the bat, I really miss shortcut keys on writing messages. Anyway, got a question...
Maybe you were joking about the reason you started NodeBB there, but made me wonder: why not just joining forces with Discourse and forking it or something?

(1) Removed link to my forums then (2) removed first reference and finally (3) removed all links but left references for later editing them back, eventually. Let's see if it goes through! (4) editing the links back in were easy, but keeping edit history isn't.

Discourse's technology stack and ours share almost nothing in common, so sadly, our skills (and vice versa) are not really transferable
The one tech we do share (redis), we use it completely differently than they do

@julian I think it's generally more advisable to be stack agnostic, but I think I see what you mean.
NodeBB does look very compelling, in any case. Quite a fantastic job there.
