IMO, featured posts should be at the top, and where you have the interstitial (where the featured posts currently are), you could put popular, or vice versa depending on best use case/data analysis.

I really like that. The ability to place assets inline with the posts or topics is great. Recently I was attempting to do something like this with my Lavender theme based forum. I would really like to be able to place widget boxes almost anywhere on the page and have the normal content flow around it.

@rod Not sure about anywhere on the page, but for repeating elements like that, I think I could do that with some very minor changes to the widgets system.
