Self Hosted vs. NodeBB Hosted

Aside from maintaining a server, what are the tradeoffs between self hosting and purchasing a hosted plan? For example, would I be able to write and use a custom plugin if I purchased your hosting service?

I'm not an official rep of NodeBB.

I think you will be able to provide your own plugins / themes with the SaaS service. I can't think of any downsides to the official hosting, besides maybe cost if you have a small community.

Yes, @pitaj is correct, there is no functional difference between the self-hosted version and the hosted version.

However, with our hosting, you also get scheduled backups, email support, in addition to us covering the upstream hosting costs. We don't allow shell access for security purposes, but if you have a plugin published to npm, you can install it yourself via the admin panel.

Otherwise, you can contact us and we can manually install it for you as well.

Is it bad that I am hoping my forum gets bigger so I can rationalize a hosted plan easier?

There are many way to contribute to NodeBB (hosted plan, translate, spreading the word, build plugins ...)

@teh_g If you want to support us but don't wish to purchase a hosted plan, using our referral code is a good way as well, because we get a commission when new users register
