Private Posts

  • Is there anyway to make private posts, where a user can post a thread inside a category and view it and reply to it, but no other users will see that post, whenever they look in the category they will only see their own posts, or users in specific groups can see these posts?

@Sean You are looking to make a category like a support forum?

This plugin does that but is not updated for latest NodeBB. pinging @julian

Thanks @pichalite -- yes, that forum would be what you're looking for, but requires a bit of updating

Contact us at sales@nodebb.org for more details!

  • @julian mind me asking what's the likelihood of this plugin seeing an update soon?

Fairly slim, as it is not in use so there is no incentive to keep it updated. A dedicated forum with stripped down permissions is doable already in core (though you don't get to allow users to reply to their topics only...)

  • @julian thanks for the quick reply. Makes total sense. Just looking for a way to allow users to have a sort of journal/diary feature on the forum where they can log private posts that wouldn't be visible to other users. Will keep looking!

@MarximusMG Perhaps they can start a chat room and not invite anybody into it

  • @julian didn't even know that was possible. Thanks for the idea!

@julian Can you do that??? Don't think so

Er... actually, I'm not really sure. You can be left in a state where there's nobody in the room except you, although I don't know if you can start a chat with nobody in it (save yourself)...

So I suppose you could always start a chat with someone, and then tell them to sod off.

    Bahaha. Awesome. :)

  • @julian @psychobunny I really feel this plugin is important. It makes total sense for a community admin to support their users in a private place which can be tracked in a scalable way.

It has numerous applications from IT support portal, learning communities , healthcare communities, ombudsman group in enterprises. This can bring you lot of customers who looks for 1 stop shop for all community managment. You can highlight this feature in your site as well.

I follow Discourse and have seen them implementing it very recently among lot of requests (In fact they have done it in a complex way within groups functionality). Nodebb plugin approach of using categories IMHO is the right way.

I understand that you would love to do it as a custom service. I feel you would get more visibility if you do it as a community plugin. Since you have already have it for older versions, I feel it is wise to do it for the new versions as well. I would urge you to reconsider the upgrade path for the support plugin.
