How much tinkering will it take to give the topic view a sidebar just like the category view?

That would require adding part of the template in category.tpl to topic.tpl, but I think @psychobunny is thinking about a customizable system where you can add different kinds of "widgets" to where you want. Once that is done it would be a matter of enabling sidebars from the ACP.
