@baris @julianlam Sorry to loop you into this. Since the data model isn't exactly spelled out anywhere, it's super tough to browse the code for things like this. I looked at the sendgrid mailer and that wasn't helpful.

Each user has different settings in their settings object for notifications and digest. The key for the settings object is user:<uid>:settings

"dailyDigestFreq" can be set to "off" to turn it off.

There there is a setting for each notification type:

     "notificationType_new-chat" : "notificationemail",
     "notificationType_new-reply" : "notificationemail",
     "notificationType_upvote" : "notificationemail",
     "notificationType_new-topic" : "notificationemail",
     "notificationType_follow" : "notificationemail",
      "notificationType_group-invite" : "notification",
      "notificationType_mention" : "notificationemail",
      "notificationType_new-register" : "notificationemail",
      "notificationType_post-queue" : "notificationemail",
      "notificationType_new-post-flag" : "notificationemail",
      "notificationType_new-user-flag" : "notificationemail",
      "notificationType_group-request-membership" : "none"

It can be set to "none" to disable emails and notifictions for that type.

Is there a way to "invalidate" an email (e.g., when a new user has registered but has not confirmed their email)? Would that stop emails from being sent?

If you set a user's email to "" then emails won't be sent to them.

Yes, my users control this for themselves.

@baris Okay, I think I'll go with changing the settings. Even if it's bouncing, I need the old email address for … reasons.

But if the email is bouncing; I don't want to leave it to the user who may never actually come back. I have a user base of 12k going back as far as 2003.

Understandable, maybe get a list from your email provider of what is bouncing, then write a script to pull those from the database?
