Revamp upvote to like

How to revamp upvote in custom theme? Do you have any recommendations. Target is to have my own handler for click, because It isn't enough just alter upvoted class

My thoughts:

1. Create custom html component in post.tpl, ex: component="post/like"
2. Define module, that should be used with - forum/topic/posts, to add click handler.
