How does nodebb.org -> community.nodebb.org login authentication work?

I have a music site that I want to connect with my forum. I'd like the music site and the forums to be one, but the only problem is this site uses PHP. Yeah, I know, I bet you're saying, PHP? really? Yes! How would I go about doing this? Perhaps this will help others out.
