You'd at least be able to incorporate multiple default image plugins if that were the case, i.e. random kitten photo generator or something more useful.

Makes sense to me. So far we've abstracted out most 3rd party things (let's say, FB SSO for example). Why not gravatar then, sounds good to me.

Might i suggest the possibility of pulling profile pictures from Facebook and linking them?

Though this feature might only work if the respective user have the ability to tag their facebook profile to their nodebb account.

Actually, I believe the Twitter SSO plugin does this already, although we could also add that in for the Facebook plugin.
