The future of Nodebb

  • Hi All,

First I apologize to the Admin for my next question.

At present, Nodebb worse than discourse on the number of users and stability. Because plugin is bad. But does Nodebb in the future get better?

Admin will continue to develop Nodebb in the future? I need Admin helpful forever, because I enjoyed Node.js and also loved Nodebb.

I'm sorry for so bad English.

    Thanks for answering me!

  • Points why NodeBB is where it is::

    • Main admin/inventor @julian is simply clueless as to what to do next,
    • NodeBB has stupid CLA.
    • JavaScript,
    • some stupid DB chosen - why not mysql?

    And muchb more....

  • @wojciech-lisik while I do agree that some things aren't done "properly" (the way I would like them to be done), I only can wonder where you got all this blatant bullshit from.

Reading your previous posts and topics lets me assume that you have either been dropped by your parents while you still were a baby or your IQ is simply as low as the pavement.

    Back to topic though.
    About NodeBB and its future.
NodeBB is actively developed and the team does their best to keep it up. Just give the GitHub repo a shot and you will see the amount and frequency of commits.

Personally I think that NodeBB has a few downsides, when it comes to monetization. However, its not impossible (check the tutorial section) to get ads running and let it NodeBB run as any other forum software.

Regarding plugins I also do agree with you. The ecosystem isn't that good, however, with some basic knowledge you can easily fix broken plugins and adjust them the way you need.

Plugins are important, but what about basic system tools like a multi-language search(non-roman alphabet)?
Just throwing it out there, as I'm currently having a hard time finding a solution 😩

Apache Solr search supports a large number of languages.
Excellent NodeBB's Solr integration by Julian: nodebb-plugin-solr.

  • @aokp Fact that sth is actively developed doesn't mean said development is going in right direction......
And (tbh) looking into repo's commit history I can see that there is more than one active directions..... in other words - it seems that each & every dev with push right has its own strategy how NodeBB shoul develop......

Slowly it starts to be as in proverb: if something is for everything, it is for nothing..... sad as NodeBB has enormous potential waiting to be unveiled.

@wojciech-lisik said in I have a couple questions, any help is appreciated!:

    JS sucks
JS is commonly used by crackers so its not trustworthy language.

Yeah, but NodeBB without NodeJS won't be NodeBB. 🙃

Did you knew that the NodeBB staff is an actual team? I am not only talking about an "online" one, but rather physical, which means that there is actual communication between the members.
Talking about the pushes themselves - the majority is about fixing and implenting new stuff as listed on the roadmap/milestones:
    0_1527369251915_Unbenannt-1.png

But you as someone, who [insert quote]:
@wojciech-lisik said in ./nodebb setup Permission denied:

I have setup 1k+ servers in my career
You might have known that already.
Now do us all a favor and go back to the low level you came from.

    Before calling me a fanboy:
I am not using NodeBB anymore since a long time, due to numerous reasons, however, none of them associated to the plugin ecosystem nor the developement in general. Its rather about native app support and monetiziation, which the NodeBB team is "missing" for me as a webmaster.
Therefore, I have no reason to defend any of the devs, staff or whatever else associated to NodeBB. Actually I do not even give a fuck about this project.
The only reason why I am responding here is to roast shit talkers like you, even if it might get me banned (couldn't care less).

Just in case you maybe didn't, remember to install Solr itself as well on your VPS, not just the plugin. I wrote some step by step details recently.

I appreciate it man, I'll have a look and update you!

  • agree on the plugin front, i know progress is needed and sometimes breakage can't be avoided, but breaking plugins multiple times a year is a good way to never develop a healthy plugin ecosystem

  • honestly I was wondering the same. the forum software is excellent. it loads faster, lightweight, uses node not something old as php, but it's so annoying to build the nodebb whenever you change some settings. plugins don't work, rebuilding/restart required to change the theme.

What does this mean? Plugins are optional, just don't use them and "ta da". Totally stable and screaming fast.

@paopevil said in The future of Nodebb:

It's been in constant development for half of a decade. It's constantly supported and updates have never stopped coming. Asking this question like this sounds like you are trying to imply something for which there is no reason to do so. Of course it will keep getting developed, there has never been the slightest thing to make anyone question the continuous development of the product.

I've been on NodeBB since the .2 or .3 release, releases are constant, support is great, updates are frequent. After so much time, it's not really appropriate to ask them to validate that they will support in the future... they've proven themselves far beyond any company statement could ever make. Plus this is open source, so that provides protection for development as well.

I don't believe that this is true at all. Nothing against Discource, an excellent product and project, for sure. But you are making a statement about NodeBB that I feel you won't be able to back up. Based on what are you making this claim? As someone who has been running NodeBB in production since 2014, more than five years, the scale and stability of NodeBB are unbelieveable. If you are having issues with scaling or stability, I think you might be conflating operational mistakes with platform issues. If NodeBB actually had stability or scaling issues, the giant sites running it would likely have noticed by now.

We run ads on it on ML and have no issues. We don't add any code, either, not even a plug in. We do it out of the box, which is often best for performance and stability.

And it is really important to understand that a bad plugin ecosystem is not based on the product. Android has a far worse software ecosystem than iOS, but you just have to be more selective when installing apps. Windows has a garbage ecosystem compared to Linux for software, it just means you can't install willy nilly without considering what you are installing. It doesn't imply that Android or Windows are bad, just that they are platforms on which people are more likely to make bad products (but doesn't imply that good ones aren't there, too.)

Where are you seeing this? I've been using the platform a long time and have seen nothing of this. NodeBB is the opposite that you are describing... it is very focused and does very little and functionality extension is left to end users to build via plugins. You can complain that the core doesn't do enough for your liking, sure. But you are complaining about the opposite.

I feel as though maybe you've never actually seen NodeBB in use?

Technically like it doesn't "work"? Or the search "works" but doesn't meet your need?

Those things aren't idea. But honestly, how often are you changing a theme? That's the kind of thing that we'd assume would be, like every few years perhaps? Live theme changes would be nice, I agree. But very low priority kind of stuff. I'd prefer just about anything get prioritized over that.
