@benroyce yeah. I reported it directly to the engineer that proceeded to follow the fediverse account 12 hours later, that's why I deleted my account.
I figured that doing advocating here to help new people get a grasp here and not get overwhelmed and leave, is a more fruitful endeavor than trying to fight the uneducated and misinformation there.

@BeAware just remember a follow is not an endorsement. the engineer could be following the fake just to collect intel

@benroyce ️the account is still there over 30 days later so I won't be holding my breath. https://www.threads.net/@fediverse

a downside to decentralized: since no one "owns" anything, anyone can be anyone, like the "anonymous" hackers can put out all sorts of announcements because anyone can pretend to be anonymous
if there is major scandalous misinfo from that account, it needs to be made an example of though, socially

@benroyce I tried. The last replies the account made were to me and a Pakistani user asking why Fediverse wasn't enabled on their account. They proceeded to tell them how the internet infrastructure in Pakistan can't support regular internet usage....which obviously isn't an issue because the user is ON the internet. The reason they can't use Fediverse is cause Threads is limiting it by country for now.️
My replies and discourse with them aren't there cause I deleted my account, but their posts are still there.

@BeAware you are deep dive eyes and ears. keep at it. there are bombs out there, waiting to go off. you're like an advance scout in a war. a war just getting started

@[email protected] @[email protected] just clearing something up, Authorized Fetch is the Mastodon name for requiring HTTP Signatures for retrieving content, even public content.
However, you already did the hard work once to sort out http signatures for publishing content, sending one to retrieve content is trivial by comparison. It took me 5 minutes.
Right now the rationale behind using it is mainly about protecting publicly visible content from being consumed by blocked servers, which is actually a side effect of the feature. There's more potential in supporting it because it then allows fine-grained access over who gets to see a resource (think private groups, DMs, etc.)

@[email protected] nah, it's not proprietary, it's just what they call it.
It's not "ActivityPub", I suppose, either, because HTTP Signatures are not explicitly defined in the spec.
It's like how NodeBB categories can follow other groups actors, and I call it "category syncing".

@julian ah. Well, my point was that they added it and others have been forced to use it or be left behind. That's the important takeaway because that's the extend method used in "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish".
I truly believe Mastodon wants to be the "last microblog standing" in the Fediverse. Or at the very least, one of the very few that can change things so dramatically.
I know that's a radical belief that nobody will agree with me. But we can only wait and see.
