Old question about Nodebb GPL3 license with theme and plugins, would like to receive response from the official team if possbile
-
With commercial purposes and open to the internet. Hopefully someday the the forum gets ads.
Will not sell nor distribute Nodebb. Understand that the teams are not the lawyers, but still official team response matters.Q1. When we write our own theme , do wo need to make our source code of the themes available to the public? (or purchase one)
Q2. When we write our own plugin, do wo need to make our source code of the plugins available to the public? (or purchase one)
Thank you.

Hi @jsmith — both the Harmony (and probably Persona) theme and quickstart plugins are licensed under MIT.
It means that if you wish to write your own theme or plugin based off of those, then you can change the license at will.
If you're writing your own theme and plugins from scratch, then you can do whatever you want with it, licensing-wise.

Persona is under BSD 2-Caluse license, but it's functionally equivalent to MIT (from my understanding there is a slight ambiguity in MIT with regards to binary distribution, while BSD is explicit about requiring copyright and license notice in that case too. But this doesn't really apply here and even if it did, just doing that guarantees you're in compliance with both anyway)
