phpbb conversion leaves html/bb code

A developer converted a phpbb forum to nodebb. The problem is that the posts are all broken.
The listings showing preview posts (right hand of the categories) and the posts all have html and bb code mixed into them.
I can get rid of that mess by disabling the markdown plugin. However, that then takes away the editing tools that I would like to offer to users.
Even when disabled, when I try to fix some of those posts by editing them, they have a big mess of html/bb code in them anyhow.
Is there something I am overlooking that others who have converted like this could share?

How did they do the conversion? I believe the importer plugin has options to convert bb code and html.

@pitaj I have been using this converter: github.com/cp-nilly/nodebb-plugin-import-phpbb
If that can help, it doesn't have any option for changing HTML/BB Codes.

I'm starting to believe there is no way to convert properly from phpbb. Might have to keep using phpbb because the converted board is simply too broken to go live. That or perhaps there is a better converter that is known to work.

nodebb-plugin-import has Post Import Tools seen here which I believe include bb code and html conversion.

Not even a freelancer developer could figure out why this plugin is not working. Surely, someone here has some ideas, leads, something? I'm trying to convert...
