why not create configurable heartbeats so you can automatically get a list of running nodebb instances
Admins should be able to opt out though.
-
But still... Where would you say, "OH! BTW, we will track your installations (by default or whatever) on version X.X".

http://forum.feathercoin.com is using NodeBB

Yeah we thought of this... it does sound like a good plan. It should be opt-in though for privacy issues as aforementioned. Although I think I'd like to ping anonymously for "number of NodeBB installs" regardless, don't know if people would be upset about that. It's a nice stat to put on our homepage
The alternative is pulling # of clones from GH's api.

@psychobunny # of clones wouldn't be a good figure to use. Take me, I've cloned about 3 times yet have just one live site.
I'd be happy to opt in to install tracking. Really don't see a problem with that

I don't think too many people would object, but it's not the tracking that is controversial (although it is, a bit...), but the fact that some companies sneak it in and cover their bases by saying "oh, but it was a checkbox that you accepted", or "it was in the terms and conditions that you totally read, right?)

I... Ehh... Thats one way of doing it I guess xD

sondorsforum.com is using NodeBB also.

I think if we do this, it should be opt-in with a benefit to the user. For example if you decide to enable it your forum gets listed at
nodebb.org/directory
maybe ranked by activity. There should be some kind of control on how much data you want to send, ranging from just your url to usage stats or just an anonymoususing nodebb
message. -
