Hardcoded topics

Hi
Im new to the forum so bear with me if this has been suggested before. Would it be possible to tweak/write a plugin which will let the user choose from a predefined list of topics? I know that tags could be used in kind of the same way but I need to limit the user in define their own topics and only choose from a predefined. Please let me know if this dosn't make sense

I am also confused.

@a_5mith and @Tanner here goes :
We are planning a forum for stock discussion. So the idea is that the user can choose from a list of stocks in a list fx. S&P500 where the user would choose from 500 diffrent stock symbols. The reason why is because we want to link the ongoing discussion with all kinds of information about the firm/topic. Ofcouse we want to provide a catogory where people can freestyle and discuss whatever topic within the stock frame they want.

@Cap It does, but it certainly seems like something that would be better suited to tags or categories/sub categories. Topics aren't really one for that sort of manipulation in most cases. However if you wanted to lock the users down to only a specific category, then the groups feature may be more useful. So that people in group S&P500 can only access those topics/categories.

@Cap Should be. You could probably create a very simple plugin that looks at something like topic.create (actual hook mary vary) and then if there's no tags, error message that at least 1 tag is required.
I think @julian may be able to confirm or deny this.
