Hi NodeBB Community,

I’m trying to integrate my website’s custom login system with NodeBB using the SSO plugin, but I’m running into issues during the authentication process. Users are redirected correctly to the login page, but after entering their credentials, they’re not being logged into NodeBB, and no session is created.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

Configured the SSO plugin with my website’s API endpoints for login and user verification.
Ensured CORS is properly configured on the website’s backend.
Tested the API endpoints independently and they return the correct user data.
Could this be an issue with the plugin’s callback URL or how the session tokens are being handled? Any tips on troubleshooting SSO integrations with NodeBB would be greatly appreciated!

Let's say for some contrived (but very real) reason, I want to add { "toot": "http://joinmastodon.org/ns#", "Emoji": "toot:Emoji" } to @context, but another member of @context might be { "toot": "http://joinmastodon.org/ns#", "focalPoint": ... }

Would it be acceptable if I just pushed my object to the end and assumed that JSON-LD parsers would correctly reduce it down to:

  "Emoji": "toot:Emoji",
  "focalPoint": ...
}

... or should I be adding in logic to detect the existing member defining toot and merge the Emoji property in?

How do I remove support for uploading files in chat and posts?

Is it possible for me to add a comment section or a treehole-like section to the nodebb homepage or a custom page added by nodebb-plugin-custom-pages plugin? Something like a blog comment section but within a nodebb custom page?

Hi All

I followed the installation instructions on Ubuntu and have the web site up and running. The instructions were pretty good, although a few small things would have helped a linux newbie like me.

I also had a weird error of "Bad Gateway" that seems to have gone away with a restart. However I am stuck now in that I cannot login with the app admin account I created during setup. A message comes up bottom right saying "Welcome back guest", then it goes to a page:

Not Found
You seem to have stumbled upon a page that does not exist

I'm sure that I'm using the correct account as per the instructions, and I also tried using the email address instead of name. I even tried using the OS account I used to install / run NodeBB.

Any idea what the problem is?? The forums have helped with various things, but I can't find anything on this...

I want to update how NodeBB's caching works for my particular usecase.

To be able to do that, I need to update the get and set methods for:
src/cache/ttl and src/cache/lru

This is of course possible by directly editing these files. But is there some way to override them from my own plugin?

I have upgraded the forum from 3.6.3 to 3.10.3 recently.

Everything seems to be alright except: the notification count is shown twice as follows:

I have uninstalled 3rd party plugins, rebuilt and checked again and yet the issue is still there.

I was wondering if anyone could give any idea on how to go about this.

I'm trying to rework the nodebb-plugin-charts plugin.
The essence of the algorithm is that one string is replaced by another.
When replacing the original string with

the <script></script> part is cut off

It seems that the plugin is very simple, but knowledge of nodebb is required
On the other hand, it would be very interesting to see how to add such a third-party library to the plugin

Hi all

I’ve agreed to help someone setup a forum, and partly because a threaded view will be useful for more in depth discussions, I think NodeBB is the best of the shortlist. However as the previous forums/websites I’ve created have been hosted on managed web space, and my experience of linux / node.js etc are very basic, I’d like to keep the setup as simple as possible.

For various reasons, it’s necessary to host it on Ionos. I’d like advice on a couple of decisions before I go any further:

1. VPS or “Cloud Server”. In terms of ease of management and scalability, I’m assuming that a Cloud Server would be the better option?
2. Ionos offer a managed MungoDB service. Any reason not to use an Ionos managed MugoDB?
3. Maintenance. It sounds like there are going to be several layers of software installed - linux, node.js, nginx, nodeBB (+ MungoDB) etc. Do all of these need to be updated separately and manually?
4. I'm tempted to use the Docker image, but I assume that is likely to be more challenging than a standard install?

Any comments on any of these would be appreciated…

Usernames of Deleted Users cannot be reused (e.g: David(deleted), another David will automatically be "David 0").
Already executed db.objects.deleteOne({_username:"David"}), and cleared all caches in /admin/advanced/cache, still get "David 0" even "David 1" after David 0 is deleted

I struggle with a lot of Chinese spam, sometimes over 100 posts a day, very often they register with hotmail.com or outlook.com e-mail addresses. The IP addresses are always different.
I'm using hCaptcha on registration, but I've also tried Google Re-Captcha with the same result.
The forum is English-only. Have anyone else seen this, or have any idea how to stop it?

This is a quite interesting idea, I have no idea whether anyone will be interested in it.

I am here in China, and among us teenagers we have a really popular form of social networking called an "askbox". I have no idea whether such sort of platforms exist in other countries, nor do I know what it is usually referred to as by foreigners.

So basically an "askbox" is some sort of an anonymous mailbox, where every user has his own personal URL link that leads to a webpage where people can ask questions anonymously in it for that person to answer. The answer to every question, should the answerer (hence the owner of the askbox) not choose to turn it private, is publicly shown for everyone to read. We consider this a really interesting way to interact with and know better about each other, and its quite popular among Chinese teenagers.

I am seeking to host a such service on this school forum that I am building, and since I don't know what this kind of social media is named abroad, I can't seem to find any useable, ready-to-deploy projects by other developers. And sadly I know nothing about how one should create such a program, only capable of deploying them. Yet I think it would be a pretty interesting thing to have on a school forum.

Such program requires a page for every user, consisting of an input field for asking questions and a displayed list of all questions previously answered by the user. An additional page only visible to the user himself displaying all the new unanswered questions, with an input field to fill in the answer for each question. Note that pages correspond to the owners not the askers, and therefore its more of a unilaterally public page like one's personal homepage.

I know this is a really sophisticated thing and I'm not having too much expectation for it to be actually realized. I have no idea whether this is even possible with NodeBB. However I think this is rather interesting, therefore posting it here to introduce it to everyone. It would be marvellous should anyone actually make it possible via either plugin or widget or even a new feature for NodeBB.

I was trying to place a Latest Users widget in the sidebar section of the categories page, and this unexpected letter "s" showed up on the very top of it and I can't seem to find how to remove it. I tried placing the widget in different parts of the page and the problem isn't solved, neither is it when I placed the widget inside containers.

As shown in the figure above, the letter appears as a sole "s" without being part of any levels in Inspection. Nor it is correspondent to any localization (in case of which I may be able to fix the problem by customizing localizations with the customize plugin). It's just......there.

I wonder if I am the only person who ran into this problem, and it would be extremely appreciated if any kindhearted person can provide some clues to how this problem can be fixed. It has been troubling me for quite some time now : (

Hello. I am using Mongodb. I get a database error at the last stage of installation. I also enter the requested information in the ./nodebb setup commands. What could be the problem?

• whether a resolvable context collection containing plain objects should also contain activities (like an outbox)

Hello there,

I am late to the party finally upgrading from 1.19 to 3.x.
My board is using a custom OAuth2 login and needs syncing username and email changes into NodeBB. So far I was using the write-api plugin (PUT /api/v2/users/<id>) which is deprecated now.

The API docs don´t show that username or email can be changed. But via testing I figured out that username change is working fine.
But I had no success on changing the email. Is there any way to do so?

(Additional info: I am using the master token and impersonate the board admin with user id 1)

Is there somewhere listed for CPU, RAM, etc that is required? (I am currently hosting on heroku)

Hello,

I was testing on the demo site and noticed that all clients can see new posts arrive in a topic in real-time, which is awesome (and a feature I've been looking for in a forum software ^.^)

I think it would also be great if:

• When posting a new topic, it updates viewers on the /recent and /category pages. (This does not seem to happen on the demo site)
• Display a person-is-typing indicator
• Who else is here / viewing indicator

These would help enhance the feeling of "presence" and real-time interactivity.
