I've noticed it only shows up sometimes. I.e.

1. If a post has 1 reply directly under it AND
2. If it has an additional reply to it after the thread

i.e. If there is a gap between a post (other conversation) and the response to it?

But I am still unable to follow anyone right now

Edit: Seems I can now follow. (Maybe changes take a while to propagate?)

However, when I added a space to my username and upper case, I am still able to follow.

TLDR: Fiddling with my username now allows me to follow. But restoring my username to what it was still allows me to follow

Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell just with that information. It could either be a plugin you've installed that is causing the load, or an external source.

To rule out plugins, disable all you have for.a day and see how your site performs.
To rule rule out external sources, install google analytics for a day and seeing if you are getting bombarded by a certain source

This is assuming you haven't had custom work done, outside of adding plugins.
