And now for the CW meta-discussion ... That was the fourth time I had tried to send a post to the Harris group. The first time was from this account, when it didn't get boosted I assumed it was a Sharkey bug (probably an incorret assumption in retrospect). Then I tried from [email protected] but it also didn't get booseted. But those posts had been CW'ed, because I usually CW political posts from these accounts (of course there are lots of gray areas what is and isn't political, but an election is clearly political). CWing political posts *isn't* the norm on indieweb.social, so I often don't do it from that account. So just to be scientific, I tried it from that account first with a CW and as expected it didn't get boosted. So then I tried it again without the CW, and it worked!On the one hand, yay. On the other hand it shows how fragile the tooling is here, if I'm trying to be considerate to people who *don't* care about the election while still getting word out to the group that does care ... too bad for me. And what if I *didn't* have an account on an instance that's okay with not CWing political posts? #uspol

yeah, that's another place where their stated reasons -- taking their time to do the two-way integration right -- have an element of truth, but it's also shamelessly self-serving. Hey wait a second, I'm noticing a pattern here! My guess is they will enable it two-way at some point, then add more and more constraints for what instances federate with them, and then turn it off -- which is what they've always done in the past. But who knows. It's not a question of if they'll screw everybody else over, but when and how. Still, useful while it lasts.@[email protected] @[email protected]

Public feeds don't federate there, but they can very much see them -- and so can everybody else, they're public!Their stated reason for caring is so that they can check whether stuff on that instance meets their content guidelines. There's probably an element of truth to that but there's also the fact that their business model (and now their AI training) depends on scooping up public information so they take every opportunity to either trick or bully people into making as much info public as possible.@[email protected] @[email protected]

I also like it a lot, I've been testing it with a hosted instance for a bit and waiting until 0.17 was out to actually set it up myself. It doesn't have all the functionality of *oma yet -- you can't edit posts, and there isn't anything like MRF -- but it's solid and doesn't require a lot of resources. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected]

@jdp23 Nice!I think I am going to stick with Mastodon myself, for now. But I've definitely given it some thought, I like a lot of what GoToSocial is doing!

@[email protected] yeah I can totally see how it's weird and deflating ... you've learned a lot, made some great connections, and created a body of work, but it's so easy to focus on what *hasn't* happened (yet). And I too am not great at letting go, so I totally get that part!
