"So I just donβt think most people ever βclick outβ anywayβ¦ "
with the exception of course being mastodon. people click out of here all of the time βΒ the engagement and interaction we see here are wildly healthy. and this translates to the real world too; we have fedi people showing up at almost every show we do these days. including from many miles away from the show. it's a passionate community. love it so muchπ₯Ή

thanks for your thoughts and input
it seams all about engagement and conditions under which it can be established.
So e.g. locking at your sides if i want to be in touche with you by email i have to agree to the terms of "Substack's". If i want to listen to music you produce you link me to bandcamp⦠if i want to follow your news i find you on masto, insta and fB - each time i have to agree to the terms of the service provider.
Now if i do not agree with this terms i would like to finde a place of you where i can find still all your stuff you publish.
So wouldn't it be good to have it all also on
#^https://deptofenergymgmt.com ?
And wouldn't it also not be interesting for you to have more control over your social media contacts like you habe over the emailadresses of your follower you collect ?

Thatβs so lovely Jamie! Proves how good it can be, when platforms arenβt trying to squeeze money out of us DIY artists β and every human who might like our artβ¦I do think Masto inherited some βdark patternsβ from corpo sites, so it is still addictive here: impacts whether we feel like listening to music when we scroll. And I think follow/following isnβt great for mental health / natural community feeling

@meljoann @hilljam @stefan @chris @ethicalrevolution @axwax @keefmarshall Yeah, thatβs a great point. Maybe linking social media to an online home is reinforcing some of those things and bringing it into your space so youβre more aware of it.
Are we heading back towards forums?

@RobertaFidora
A self host-able federated Discord style thing is something I hope will happen! (Well that would help the follower/following thing at least)@hilljam @stefan @chris @ethicalrevolution @axwax @keefmarshall
-
@meljoann @hilljam @stefan @chris @ethicalrevolution @axwax @keefmarshall Now that would be excellentβ¦

@RobertaFidora
Specifically, being able to join any channel from any server would be excellent.@hilljam @stefan @chris @ethicalrevolution @axwax @keefmarshall

@meljoann @RobertaFidora @hilljam @stefan @chris @ethicalrevolution @axwax
well.. Matrix would do this if it was properly Federated. Which of course it isn't.
I still think a lot of these ideas sound cool but I'm not sure what real-world problem they're actually solving.
But then I don't have the followers/fans you folks do

so this would be for live audio/video streaming ? -
-
I don't know - that's the point. What real world problems exist that all these new ideas solve?
I see lots of solutions, I am not clear what problems they are solving.
This could be on me - there might be very important problems that these solve, that aren't obvious to me.

@keef
What real world problems exist that all these new ideas solve?
Hmm ?
So we have to argue about the the sense and value of decentralized networking ? -

@chris I guess more just for general music community / intersecting communities.
We already have Owncast for live streaming⦠Love that! And Peertube

sorry, was just trying to understand what you meant by this. -
ππ±π»π²πΌreplied to Meljoann last edited by@Meljoann so you would find an app useful which could offer a mix of Owncast / Peertube / Goast / Masto for music communities ?

@chris like⦠Hubzilla?! Haha! I do like trying new things and possibly will try it at some stage.
Tbh Iβm fine using the apps I have, music discovery is the hardest thing - but mostly for the reason that the vast majority of music listeners are using platforms that lock DIY artists out
There are no real βone size fits allβ answers, nothing that good tech alone can solve. We just have to keep advocating for more open access to discovering and curating new music β in my opinion anyways
-
ππ±π»π²πΌreplied to Meljoann last edited by@Meljoann Hubzilla can do a lot but is not that good in live streaming
I'm just curious what is on your mind - thanks for letting me knowThere are no real βone size fits allβ answers, nothing that good tech alone can solve. We just have to keep advocating for more open access to discovering and curating new music
this i quid true i believe too,
After all it is not a question of tech but of culture
but tech can influence what kind of culture you can live... so it is still bonded together somehow -

i can see a situation in which someone would like everything to be in one place, for sure. i'm just not that person, i guess?
if i tried to avoid terms of service in 2024, i would never leave the house. haha. and of course mastodon has a terms of service, as does wordpress. it's not like by self-hosting we avoid this stuff. it's more a matter of shades of grey. worse and better platforms, all of which have some good people whom i'm interested in reaching. i press on οΈ
