A self host-able federated Discord style thing is something I hope will happen!
so this would be for live audio/video streaming ? -
-
I don't know - that's the point. What real world problems exist that all these new ideas solve?
I see lots of solutions, I am not clear what problems they are solving.
This could be on me - there might be very important problems that these solve, that aren't obvious to me.

@keef
What real world problems exist that all these new ideas solve?
Hmm ?
So we have to argue about the the sense and value of decentralized networking ? -

@chris I guess more just for general music community / intersecting communities.
We already have Owncast for live streaming⦠Love that! And Peertube
-
@keef
I still think a lot of these ideas sound cool but I'm not sure what real-world problem they're actually solving.
sorry, was just trying to understand what you meant by this. -
ππ±π»π²πΌreplied to Meljoann on last edited by@Meljoann so you would find an app useful which could offer a mix of Owncast / Peertube / Goast / Masto for music communities ?

@chris like⦠Hubzilla?! Haha! I do like trying new things and possibly will try it at some stage.
Tbh Iβm fine using the apps I have, music discovery is the hardest thing - but mostly for the reason that the vast majority of music listeners are using platforms that lock DIY artists out
There are no real βone size fits allβ answers, nothing that good tech alone can solve. We just have to keep advocating for more open access to discovering and curating new music β in my opinion anyways
-
ππ±π»π²πΌreplied to Meljoann on last edited by@Meljoann Hubzilla can do a lot but is not that good in live streaming
I'm just curious what is on your mind - thanks for letting me knowThere are no real βone size fits allβ answers, nothing that good tech alone can solve. We just have to keep advocating for more open access to discovering and curating new music
this i quid true i believe too,
After all it is not a question of tech but of culture
but tech can influence what kind of culture you can live... so it is still bonded together somehow -

i can see a situation in which someone would like everything to be in one place, for sure. i'm just not that person, i guess?
if i tried to avoid terms of service in 2024, i would never leave the house. haha. and of course mastodon has a terms of service, as does wordpress. it's not like by self-hosting we avoid this stuff. it's more a matter of shades of grey. worse and better platforms, all of which have some good people whom i'm interested in reaching. i press on οΈ

mastodon has a terms of service, as does wordpress. it's not like by self-hosting we avoid this stuff.
Now the software licenses and the therms under which software is provided as a service are two different things.
So e.g. so can download and install Masto by the GNU Affero General Public License #^https://www.gnu.org/licenses/ but this says nothing about the terms under which a Masto Server is running and allowing registration. This is up to the one who is running the server as a service for others.
You are on mastodon.social - so you finde the terms here: https://mastodon.social/privacy-policy
Now if you are an artists running an own Website ( ideally with free software e.g. like WP) You are the one who does define the terms and conditions under with you offer things.
Personally i donΒ΄t want to be pushed into surveilling systems just because i like your songs. Unfortunately even bandcamp does quid a lot tracking . So ideally i would like to find your publications without tracking other parties included. -
ππ±π»π²πΌreplied to ππ±π»π²πΌ on last edited by@jamie HELL βοΈ this all goes beyond your personal work.
The fundamental question here is: will we end up or stuck in a world where surveillance technologies are part of everything we like to consume and even artists just can/have to agree to that. -

@chris yes, i think you are precisely right about this. and i'm very grateful that you're taking the time to try to change it! i simply don't have time to right now. so i am extra grateful for the people like you who are stepping up and working on solutions. οΈ
