Do you say "Fediverse" or "Social Web"?

Mastodon, a microblogging app that implements parts of the Social Web protocol ActivityPub, so it can integrate with the Fediverse.
("App" in the sense it is usually referred to, but it is a webapp + API to allow other UI clients).

@smallcircles @evan So what you're saying is that it is actually webapp/API, which you have begun calling "webapp plus API"?

@smallcircles @tiny_m @evan https://itsfoss.com/gnu-linux-copypasta/ โ Sorry, we'll put you out of your misery now. This is only funny if everyone's on the same page!

I'm trying to get more people to join the Fediverse, and for this reason, I tell people "I'm working on the social web."
-
@[email protected] Depends who the audience is.
If I'm talking to fedi devs, then fediverse it is. Otherwise, social web has some pre-existing connotations about it that lend itself to further discussion.
But I also like to say "the next generation of social media", because it segues nicely into a discussion about how incumbent social media is a dumpster fire and privacy nightmare (not necessarily in that order).

Thanks, everyone. I say "social web" mostly, since it's the name we used for the working group at W3C for developing the standards that make this network possible.
However, I also call it the Fediverse when I'm discussing it with people who prefer that term.
Same thing, different terms.

@evan they've got different meanings to me. fediverse is specifically the federated parts, activitypub et al. social web can mean any interoperable interlinked part, not necessarily federated.

@trwnh I don't think that way! For me, the Social Web is for technologies that came out of the Social Web Working Group.

@evan the concept predates the working group, so iโd say the Social Web Working Group was named after the thing it tried to write specs for, not the other way around
