okay how do i actually just … send files… to other people? my mail server has a low file size limit. i don’t have a webserver lying around at home. i don’t want to give just anyone ssh access ??? apart from the fact that most people don’t even know what that is. i have an account on a nextcloud server but because it’s the free tier i can’t just make files shareable. matrix can send files but as far as i see, they just stay on the server, and therefore obviously my matrix server has a low file size limit… didn’t this use to be possible? with xmpp you could just send a file. and the file would get sent. and that was that. i don’t want the files to be hosted and lie around on random servers. i just want to send them.

@skye magic wormhole
no, really, that's the program's name
we haven't audited the cryptographic design in any detail, though it sounds good. if you have something particularly sensitive, you can always gpg it and send the gpg'd file instead of the cleartext

@irenes somehow i don’t think that will work to send a file from my freebsd computer to someone’s iphone

@skye oh, yeah, that's true. yeah we don't have a solution for that.
-
@skye we would go the web server route (and have, in the past) but we do agree that it's work to set up
-
@skye if it helps, you can use the CLI tool "split" to reduce it to chunks of whatever size your medium allows
-
@skye you are absolutely correct to observe that this used to be possible, IRC and XMPP did it just fine. direct peer connection in chat protocols is one of the lesser-noted casualties of everything becoming corporate.

@irenes sure, but do i want to put that burden on volunteer providers of free services? it’s completely unnecessary to have nonsense files like this lying around forever. but also, if i split files, then someone else is going to receive files they don’t know what to do with and i’m gonna spend 3 hours trying to figure out how to put it pack together on their iphone / lineageos / windows xp / …

@skye you can always delete the files after the recipient has them
but yes, we do sympathize with these concerns, and also it might end up being straight-up impossible to do anything on the phone side of things
