@razibal I've changed how this works on the develop branch, instead of checking the online status it will check if the user has already read the chat, this should cause an email to be sent to all users who haven't seen the chat message.

We're running a community forum where different sub-groups have both public and private categories. Question is, is it possible to do so administrators don't get notified about new topics and replies in these categories?

What kind of notifications are the administrators getting? A new topic that's posted in a category doesn't generate a notification unless there is a plugin installed like
nodebb-plugin-category-notifications.Replies also don't generate notifications unless that user is watching that topic.
