Is NodeBB still free?

Solved NodeBB Development
  • Hi,

I think around last year I saw that NodeBB is free to use, so is it still free to use now because I don't see it anywhere anymore, only plans and pricing. 🙂

The paid for tiers on nodebbs website are for people that don't want to install, configure and maintain themselves.

  • Yeah, its still free. I wish they'd use the NodeBB.org domain for more of the open source community side of things, and use nodebb.com for the commercial side like wordpress does. But alas, they need to make a living somehow...

They charge for hosting services. But NodeBB is open source just like it used to be.

  • @HolyPhoenix That's not a bad idea... we just don't have plans to split the sites yet. We do get many queries about the open source project, so it does seem natural that we'll go this route sooner or later.

    Great! Thanks! 😄

I understand that you don't want to split up anything, but how about mentioning the OpenSource version at all? 🙂
Right now, when I go to nodebb.org, the only chance to see that there is a free version that I can roll out myself is to know what the github logo looks like and then scroll down all the way to the bottom to spot it there (very small, barely visible).
Additionally, if I have AdBlock Plus turned on, these social buttons do not appear at all.

I perfectly understand that you want to earn money and therefore want to focus the page around your hosting service but I think that you could significantly cut the amount of requests from people who heard about a cool OpenSource forum and who now struggle to find a link to download it.

@volanar Thans for the suggestion. After switching to Postgres we are still not getting the better troughput than redis.

@julian Is it possibl to share the any benchmark results of MongoDB.

The only option we have now to go with redis(RDB + AOF) with the above results shared by @venkat123 here
    https://community.nodebb.org/post/84368

Any suggestions on MongoDB, Redis or Postgress config setting to get better performance.

@anirban-dutta I use command like this npm install git+https://github.com/me-cooper/nodebb-plugin-makesmart-gallery.git when repo is not recognized by npm install

Just remember to add .git at the end of github repo url.

Glad to report that as of today, April 25th, all instances of our Premium Hosted platform benefit from backups stored via the Tarsnap backup service.

Our previous backup solution consisted of local file system backups of each instance's database contents, persisted to the local file system. This had two shortcomings:

Backups were not hosted off-site (a big no-no! 😦) Uploaded files in /public/uploads were not backed up

I'm glad to say that both of these shortcomings have now been addressed. Luckily, we have never had to restore a NodeBB instance from back up, thanks to our reliable hosting from DigitalOcean. Hopefully, we'll never have to 😄
