Friends with smart home kit.
I've got an iDevices instant switch on my nightstand connected to a plugin switch that it out of reach for my lamp.
Lately the instant loses connection requiring me to remove it, reset the switch and re-connect.
Are there better secondary switch set ups from someone better than iDevices?

@jwilker itβs a wee involved, but totally doableβ¦ Iβm a big fan of Shelly relays/products. Theyβre dumb as bricks (meaning no fancy proprietary crap apps) and highly reliable.

@octothorpe Interesting! These folks? https://www.shelly.com/en
I def prefer as few apps as possible and fewer hubs
-
@octothorpe @jwilker I've got a couple of their controls configured with a third party home kit firmware to control my lights. AFAIK their button isn't supported by the firmware though.
If you want to go down the Shelly road, I could send you some new in-box controls that I ended up not needing (went a little crazy during a Black Friday sale ).

@jwilker yup! Those folks. And if you do Home Assistant, theyβre very HA friendly.
-
@octothorpe @jwilker Placing a bet that if he doesn't want hubs, he's also not using HA.
-
@jackbrewster @jwilker FWIW, my usecase is βonly use real hardware to switch on and off things that arenβt normally physically connected to the same switchβ ex: 4 lights in different parts of the same room that I want to control with the same switch.
The great part about it is in the event of a wifi outage or something, the hardware still works⦠so your switch will still work if you have hardware connected. (Ex: lamp plugged into socket controlled by the switch normally)
-
@jackbrewster @jwilker does HA count as a hub? Mentally I donβt, but I can totally see folks saying βof course, duh!β
-
@octothorpe @jwilker It's an external thing (nas, computer, etc.) that requires care and feeding. Which I actually think is worse than a hub.
-
@jackbrewster @jwilker fair.
-
@octothorpe @jwilker The shellys I have installed work with physical switches. That plus the hk firmware is why I picked them.

@jackbrewster @octothorpe Yeah I like my iDevice switches for the same reason. WiFi out, theyβre still physical switches. I prefer physical first then add-on/software 2nd (instant switch, Hue controller, etc)

@octothorpe @jackbrewster LOL Yeah.
I hate having to rely on software and remote switches. Even with solid WiFi everywhere, theyβre still flakey.

@jwilker @jackbrewster and having the bonus of ostensibly zero latency.

@octothorpe @jackbrewster Sigh. SO MUCH LATENCY!
Half the time Iβll turn the nightstand off, which triggers other lights. And weβll lay there staring at the ceiling for up to a minute before the rest of the lights catch up.
