@jwilker yup! Those folks. And if you do Home Assistant, they’re very HA friendly.
-
@octothorpe @jwilker Placing a bet that if he doesn't want hubs, he's also not using HA.
-
@jackbrewster @jwilker FWIW, my usecase is ‘only use real hardware to switch on and off things that aren’t normally physically connected to the same switch’ ex: 4 lights in different parts of the same room that I want to control with the same switch.
The great part about it is in the event of a wifi outage or something, the hardware still works… so your switch will still work if you have hardware connected. (Ex: lamp plugged into socket controlled by the switch normally)
-
@jackbrewster @jwilker does HA count as a hub? Mentally I don’t, but I can totally see folks saying ‘of course, duh!’
-
@octothorpe @jwilker It's an external thing (nas, computer, etc.) that requires care and feeding. Which I actually think is worse than a hub.
-
@jackbrewster @jwilker fair.
-
@octothorpe @jwilker The shellys I have installed work with physical switches. That plus the hk firmware is why I picked them.

@jackbrewster @octothorpe Yeah I like my iDevice switches for the same reason. WiFi out, they’re still physical switches. I prefer physical first then add-on/software 2nd (instant switch, Hue controller, etc)

@jwilker @jackbrewster ‘progressive enhancement’

@octothorpe @jackbrewster LOL Yeah.
I hate having to rely on software and remote switches. Even with solid WiFi everywhere, they’re still flakey.

@jwilker @jackbrewster and having the bonus of ostensibly zero latency.

@octothorpe @jackbrewster Sigh. SO MUCH LATENCY!
Half the time I’ll turn the nightstand off, which triggers other lights. And we’ll lay there staring at the ceiling for up to a minute before the rest of the lights catch up.

@octothorpe @jackbrewster yeah. Some/ most nights. Nearly instantaneous. Other times “is it working ? Oh yeah there it goes”
