Wow!

@benpate I'm excited for the prospect of how this could work with the Fediverse. Maybe I subscribe to artists as a Mastodon user to see when they drop new albums? Comment on tracks? Install a music app that lets me listen to "radio" of random tracks from my followed artists.
Long term ideas of course, and maybe not in line with what you have in mind (particularly if artists will be trying to make money), but I look forward to seeing where this goes!
-
@benpate I'd also be curious how it interops with Funkwhale or Peertube.

@benpate it's in the TOS. Terms of Service

@ill_logic Thanks. And, I think your long term vision is spot on.
Today, you can Follow and Share artist's profiles. You can Share and Like albums and individual tracks. I haven't done comments, yet, but it's certainly doable if we work through the social implications.
I'm also working on better discovery: talking to some Internet Radio Stations to learn what they'd need to publish a musicians library to them (with permission, of course)
-
@benpate I guess I'd need a bandwagon account to do more than follow for now? I went to a musician's account from my Mastodon profile and I didn't see any of their library.
-
@ill_logic I've been focusing on the biggest platforms, first.
e.g. I think I've just finished up supporting Mastodon's "Secure Mode" which is a big stumbling block for many Federated projects.
Bandwagon *should* work with something like PeerTube right now (though that'll need testing)
Funkwhale is a whole different animal (literally) because it veered pretty heavily off of the ActivityPub standard. I *think* we can interop with this app, too, but after we validate larger apps.
-
@ill_logic One more thought: We may be able to *read* from Funkwhale sooner than we can *write* to it.
My goal for the discovery/search project is to see if we can index Funkwhale sites (among others) as a first step to unifying all the music on the Fediverse.

@clifmo Gotcha, yes. The TOS is very "non-legalese" at the moment, but I want to make sure we're respecting musicians rights and copyrights out of the gate.
-
@ill_logic Yeah, Mastodon doesn't give us a lot of room to display custom profile stuff.
However, new posts (like album releases, events, and news items) do show up in followers' Mastodon feeds.
If you've got suggestions on how to get Mastodon to show album info (and other "permanent library" -type information) I'm eager to figure this out.

@benpate Yeah this got me thinking, I wonder if there's a "library browse" mode for ActivityPub. I haven't looked at the spec for a while. Most things seem inherently temporally oriented. A library orientation of the data could work well for a photo album site. Archive.org could plug in this way even. Lots of options open up.
But yeah new music alerts is what I mean. I guess you didn't backfill all of the existing albums, I don't see them. But I'll follow a couple artists and see what comes!
-
I'm gonna blame Mastodon (mostly) for not backfilling things. It's certainly possible to browse someone's existing library (or outbox) to see what they've posted in the past.
At scale, it's just a really hard task, so I think they made the decision to only import data from when they start following you.
