Notifications marked as read when you come in the profile are user.

Example in the picture:
- Hooray! We have a new notification!
- Go to the profile of a person.
- Notification is considered as read. Refresh page to verify this.

That's odd, what's the link for the picture in the top corner, and is it different from your profile picture in accounts page?

What about a hard refresh, does it cok back then?

For the sake of completeness, here is how I solved it.

I'm not very proud of the solution but it works.

In the emailer plugin, I added this bit to mailOptions variable.
Now I need to be very careful not to update the plugin and overwrite the index.js file

Never mind... I narrowed it down to a plugin that i made 😄 Nodebb stopped restarting when i disabled it.
