Wanna buy a non-smart TV????
-
@Edent That would still contain obnoxious software to gum up the works. I prefer a "dumb" TV.
-
@Edent does that work??
-
@Edent I want boring, fast simple menus and a super fast boot time from standby. All of which my 10 year old 1080p 40" Samsung dumb TV has and many many smart TVs I have seen don't, there's too much going on. I dread the old yeller's death. I want a simple pane of glass I can connect other things to (that I can choose and upgrade at my leisure).
-
@jackeric yes. I have a a couple which have never been connected. They're plugged in to HDMI / FreeView.
-
@GreenSysAdmin
I doubt you've actually looked at any modern panels. All the (cheap!) smart tv's I've got boot instantly. Menus to toggle between HDMI sockets are fast.
I wonder what sort of TVs you're actually looking at? -
@Edent For me, it'd be like wanting to buy a classical guitar to play acoustically, and then buying an electro-acoustic and never plugging it into an amp. It's the waste of resources – material, time, etc. – that could've been saved, or better spent making, say, the acoustics better.
-
@lopta what do you mean by "gum up the works"?
All the smart TVs I've got just let me switch between HDMI sources instantly. -
@miblo It's more efficient to mass manufacture something than to make something niche.
-
@Edent
It may be because of the brand, but I have to circuit power off the TV once a month because it stops working.I mean sure, once a month isn't a big deal, the TV is still here, but it annoys me that I have to do this routine at all.
So, I agree with you in that it's not hard, I have one and I did just that, but it can come with needless drawbacks and side effects.
-
@Edent I literally set them up for friends and family all the time. Admittedly they are always tempted by the lower tier rebadged Turkish Vestel crap (Toshiba, JVC etc. the brands that people think are "gold standard" but haven't been for years). So I'm not just idly commenting based on nothing (which I know grinds your gears).
Look at your other replies too. I'm not alone.

-
@matrixes you should return that for a full refund - it sounds broken.
-
@GreenSysAdmin sure, but buy a dumb TV from Vestel and you'll have the same experience.
The speed isn't related to it being smart or not.
-
@lopta you should move somewhere better?
-
@Edent my TV apologises to me constantly because it can't do the smart stuff. I wish there were a way to say, no, it's OK, I'm depriving you of your lifeblood (network connection) on purpose!
-
@skylar I have a soldering iron you can borrow
-
@Edent Sony, Samsung, LG with its "air remote" - all as bad. This is not a "crap brand" disease...
-
@GreenSysAdmin don't know what to tell you, mate. Literally all my smart TVs (Toshiba, Panasonic, Hisense) react quickly to their IR remotes.
If you've bought something slow, return it for a better model.
-
@Edent I've tested a lot of TVs at a charity shop and I can say the only thing that matters to me is how long it takes from pressing a button to something happening
-
@Edent We live in town. OTA just isn't ubiquitous since the transition to DTV halved the range. #television
