"In this moment, … it is clear that women have electoral and political power over more than abortion rights.

"It never ceases to amaze me how amazed men are that women are voting for their literal freedom from a world where the government can force you to be an incubator - enduring months of daily torture and a lifetime of physical and psychological damage.
Yes we are single issue voters. The single issue is our life.
Stop being surprised that women are making this their issue.
Start being surprised that more men aren’t making it theirs."

"[Ann Selzer's poll] shocked the political world. It also reminded us that the Supreme Court’s Dobb’s decision continues to have serious electoral consequences for the party that is determined to turn women into second-class citizens."

"Iowa has one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country. Beyond that, the state has been losing OB-GYNs since before Roe v Wade was overturned. And, in the wake of the decision, it’s been losing medical providers of all specialties."

@wdlindsy When people in government mostly if not all misogynistic men, feel they know more then Medical Doctors, the obvious result is what we see happening in Iowa.

"AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO DETECTS, among many of my fellow commentators commentating away on this election, a kind of reluctance, almost a kind of embarrassment, to state the obvious: Abortion rights is the issue that could decide this presidential contest.
This is particularly clear from Ann Selzer’s Iowa poll…."

We are underappreciating the significance of the Dobbs decision.

@wdlindsy I remember having this conversation 2 years ago with a very conservative student. He was very bright and thorough but he'd been homeschooled and really couldn't grasp that abortion was a BFD.

On one hand, you could vote for an old, orange, deranged, make-up wearing con-artist rapist and felon or a young, intelligent, compassionate adult.... and some people are having a hard time deciding?

I am not at all surprised that the pundit class finally saw the elephant in the room the last weekend of a historic election.

@Terypat Well-stated. Yes, count me unsurprised, too. I've come to see that the middle name of that surfeited, arrogant class is Shameless.

@tlariv @timo21 Kristol is far from a hero of mine. I excerpt material here from people whose worldview I don't share, people of whom I am highly critical. At the same time, I think that the threat we now face from rising fascism is so serious that it behooves us to set aside our differences if we are united in the common goal of pushing back that rising tide of fascism. And when people of his ilk say something sensible, I therefore share it, if it seems worth sharing.

@akamran I had a conversation about that very thing just a few days ago with a friend whose nieces and nephews are all being homeschooled or taught in church-based schools in our right-wing little red state. She thinks the education they are receiving is deplorable and fears for the future, when so many young folks are being "educated" in this way.

@samhkennedy I can't answer your question, unfortunately, since I'm not among those people to whom your final question refers. To me, it seems incomprehensible that there are people who imagine that older women would not be intently concerned about the circumstances and future of their daughters and granddaughters.

If men are having trouble comprehending this message, they should be speaking to women over the age of 70. They've lived the transition into Dobbs. I remember the era well.
They knew. They know. And the way they're breaking against Trump in this election clearly demonstrates their opinion that this constituted an important part of their identity.
Personally, I don't get the argument to suppress women. When men elevate women, we elevate ourselves. If this were about male bodily autonomy, my god, would the pitchforks come out!
