@Natanox if you want a privacy frindly a mura cloud , it shuld be possible on prem. that shud be possible with out big hassle rigt. But it still isnt nowadays.
You have to use thair not Main line compatible nextcloud fork . on docker.
And have to re build your Android Rom in some cases of phone modle. This is Not user Frindly.

@i3le I don't see the problem with their cloud. It's literally a nicely featured Nextcloud.

@Natanox the Mura Nextcloud fork has some big issues by disign.
That leads to Major privacy Issues by disign also for #muracloud
That you have to use if you dont want want to spend mutch time of porting the roms to your your own cloud domain or a less tech intense person.

@i3le
> "You have to their custom nextcloud fork"No, you don't. If you don't want to use the /e/ Cloud you don't have to.
> "You have to rebuild your Android Rom"
Not a single customer who buys a phone from them has to do that.
> "It should be possible on prem"
If someone wants a local Nextcloud nothing stops them. The average user primarily want it to work - having a ready-to-use device for your local network would be a nice thing for a niche audience.

@i3le What the hell are you even talking about? You can just press "Skip" if the phone asks you if you want to login to /e/ Cloud.
Nothing of what you say makes sense, even less from the perspective of an average user.

@Natanox Mura cloud forked Nextcloud and added some features but dont capured the problems of uaser encryption in cloud. Admins can look into your user data if they want. The data on disk is more or less Plain text. The possible encryption can be rolled back by admins.

@Natanox this is the reason because Mura and efoundation it is only a: promise oft the product that they dont look at your Data.
Its trustworthy and i belive in e project, but you shuld not only build up trust . do it by disign.

@Natanox if you only want to use e on a phone with out mura than you have to compare it to #grapheneos and than we know the winner and that is not eos

@i3le *sigh* Okay, let's completely ignore that my toot was about affordability for a moment and let's assume everyone is rich and knows about NitroPhones so they can go buy a phone with GrapheneOS.
Does GrapheneOS provide full app support without (!) a learning curve about the sandbox? Does it come with proper cloud integration and functionalities in any way or do you have to know what you do to set things up yourself? Will the average user be happy or rather annoyed by the many hurdles?

@i3le You, as many other in the FOSS community, keep ignoring what accessibility means. It means that people without background knowledge in tech can pick up a device and enjoy using it.
You should *not* have to know how the internals of an engine work to drive a car. You should only have to know where to look or ask if a warning sign lights up.
Now, given it also was about affordability⦠yeah. GrapheneOS isn't even well affordable for most but really expensive.

@i3le Sorry if I'm rather harsh now, but I had this discussion a myriad of times about both smartphones and Linux desktop and I'm annoyed as all hell about how we're kept back by a lack of understanding the needs of those who're not part of our nerdy sub-culture.
If @e_mydata really got that encryption problem with the cloud they have to fix that asap indeed. However for anything else, they do a fantastic job making actual privacy accessible to the masses without a degradation of life quality.

@Natanox you can geht a supported grapheneos phone for 200 Euro if you are willing to usw the web flasher
-
Natasha Nox πΊπ¦π΅πΈreplied to i3le lost and found last edited by
@i3le So we have to either throw accessibility or affordability out of the window.
And then there's also the difference between buying a used phone from someone (with all its connected risks and lowered support window) and buying new directly from a store where you got warranty.

@Natanox i think you cant geht nearly on a save dirivitive if you have uasers who dont care
-
Natasha Nox πΊπ¦π΅πΈreplied to i3le lost and found last edited by
@i3le It's not about caring, I'm arguing for people who don't *know* and therefore are afraid to do something wrong.
Just because I don't want to replace a broken part of my (theoretical) car's engine myself it's not that I'm not caring, but I don't want to screw it up or simply don't have the time or nerves to do it.
Arguing otherwise is simply disrespectful towards people.

@i3le @e_mydata Then tell them they have to do better in terms of security, but don't argue as if GrapheneOS would be in any shape or form an alternative in terms of affordability *and* accessibility. Because that's what this thread was about, their (current) 200β¬ phone that comes with all the features expected from a current smartphone by the average person.
