In a thread yesterday, I noted that after WWII, many Americans asked how it was possible that large numbers of Germans could hear Hitler's dangerous, crazy ranting targeting minority communities and lusting after blood and still support him.

@wdlindsy here's a contrast with the NYT front page, on the same day:

Absolutely bone chilling. It is this kind of "rumors" that carry unacceptable probabilities of leading to real pogroms.
Anyone caught amplifyjng them should be shunned until they show remorse of their actions. Anyone caught initiating them should be banished from any platform until they make amends.
Of course that happens only in a society that still has the power to clean up it's own information sphere, and is not stuck in some loop of doom and terminal information pollution.

@wdlindsy enough of these goddamned sugar daddies. Let's tax them to where they stop trying to destroy our country

@deepmud As the old Yiddish saying has it, from your mouth to God's ears.

@gvenema I agree. And I appreciate Parker Molloy for pointing that out and linking this kind of wildly irresponsible lying designed to demonize people easily recognizable as the other to the tactics of the ugly old blood libel. Excellent commentary on your part.

@jamesmarshall Thank you. Astonishing, isn't it? Has the New York Times absolutely no shame? Wait. don't answer that โ I think we both know the answer.

@mickymorse You're right. And I won't ever forget Paul Ryan whispering to a group of Republicans when he was speaker of the House that Trump was in cahoots with the Russians. It has long been an open secret.

@Runyan50 I've often thought that they imagine โ fatuously โ that when the fascism they're helping to usher in arrives, it will be fascism-lite for them, no matter how brutal it is for lesser beings.

@JSharp1436 Yes, Pizzagate popped into my mind immediately when I read this story. And we know how dangerous that lie turned out to be when a North Carolina man drove from North Carolina to D.C. with a rifle to shoot up the pizza place alleged to be the scene of those totally invented horrors, and found it didn't even have a basement โ where the horrors were supposedly taking place.

@bufalo1973 It does, indeed. See Parker Molloy's good commentary on that very point further down this same thread.

@clearwater53 Yes, I think we need to pay attention to the fact that a cadre of Americans approaching half are so susceptible to the lure of authoritarianism, to disinformation, to being manipulated by those who want to spark culture wars. I'd say the underfunding of education for a long time now โ with Republicans doing all they can to assure that this is the case โ plays a key role here.
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to clearwater53 last edited by
@clearwater53 Yes, urban myths about people of Asian background eating cats and dogs have long circulated in some sectors of American culture, and this story, targeting people of Haitian background, surely is a variant of those stories. They're designed to dehumanize those targeted in this way.
