In a thread yesterday, I noted that after WWII, many Americans asked how it was possible that large numbers of Germans could hear Hitler's dangerous, crazy ranting targeting minority communities and lusting after blood and still support him.

@jamesmarshall Thank you. Astonishing, isn't it? Has the New York Times absolutely no shame? Wait. don't answer that — I think we both know the answer.

@lbaker356 The media, do you mean? If so, I think they know full well and simply pretend not to know.

@mickymorse You're right. And I won't ever forget Paul Ryan whispering to a group of Republicans when he was speaker of the House that Trump was in cahoots with the Russians. It has long been an open secret.

@Runyan50 Could well be, I think.

@Runyan50 I've often thought that they imagine — fatuously — that when the fascism they're helping to usher in arrives, it will be fascism-lite for them, no matter how brutal it is for lesser beings.

@JSharp1436 Yes, Pizzagate popped into my mind immediately when I read this story. And we know how dangerous that lie turned out to be when a North Carolina man drove from North Carolina to D.C. with a rifle to shoot up the pizza place alleged to be the scene of those totally invented horrors, and found it didn't even have a basement — where the horrors were supposedly taking place.

@bufalo1973 It does, indeed. See Parker Molloy's good commentary on that very point further down this same thread.

@clearwater53 Yes, I think we need to pay attention to the fact that a cadre of Americans approaching half are so susceptible to the lure of authoritarianism, to disinformation, to being manipulated by those who want to spark culture wars. I'd say the underfunding of education for a long time now — with Republicans doing all they can to assure that this is the case — plays a key role here.
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to clearwater53 last edited by
@clearwater53 Yes, urban myths about people of Asian background eating cats and dogs have long circulated in some sectors of American culture, and this story, targeting people of Haitian background, surely is a variant of those stories. They're designed to dehumanize those targeted in this way.

@wdlindsy God I am so sick of sloppy journalism.
Nate Silver left 538 in May 2023.
538 has not projected Trump as a winner. They currently show Harris leading with 55-45 odds. The highest he's gotten since Harris joined the race is 47.
Before Biden dropped out, they had Trump with a 52-48 lead, but nothing even close to what this article claims.
God I am so sick of sloppy journalism. Please quit spreading this garbage.

@luv_wins Fascist works for me. Many people have problems with that word, however, and for that reason, authoritarian often serves, especially on social media where people can go off on bizarre tangents, totally missing points, as they debate the intricacies of this or that term.
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to Pamela last edited by
@luv_wins I've said for quite a while now that the problem isn't so much Trump as it is a large number of Americans for whom Trump is merely their face in the mirror.

I’d rather Harris be considered underdog all the way to Election Day. That will help sustain momentum and focus on the cause, no letting down.
Nate Silver can go eat a bag of dicks. Don’t trust the polls. Spread the word: Get out and #VoteBlueDownBallot
