In a thread yesterday, I noted that after WWII, many Americans asked how it was possible that large numbers of Germans could hear Hitler's dangerous, crazy ranting targeting minority communities and lusting after blood and still support him.

The Good News Is:
I saw a clip of Thiel saying he is thinking of leaving the US if the Democrats win. Like picking up his family and moving is hard for a person with houses around the world (probably).
I often wonder why billionaires aren't joyful people. But I guess when you want EVERYBODY'S money there is no room for joy.

@Terypat "I often wonder why billionaires aren't joyful people." I love that statement. It seems to me something well worth pondering.

As a descendant of Eastern European Jews who immigrated to the U.S. and surely left behind others who were murdered by Nazis, and as a parent of a trans adult who likewise would have been murdered by Nazis, what should I think of my MAGA in-laws who seem like the kind who might have consented to the murder of my ancestors and my trans daughter if they had lived 85 years ago?

538 and every other media produced poll is garbage.

Mr Silver got "too big for his britches" many years ago. Did not know about the Thiel connection. Yuck.

@noondlyt I believe the point here is that Nate Silver is financially connected to Peter Thiel.

@wdlindsy If the GOP does not wake up, it'll meet the same fate as the Whigs https://traffic.libsyn.com/yinhistory/EP38-Political_Parties.mp3

@wdlindsy Polls don't vote, voters do
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to ChasMusic (he/him) last edited by
@ChasMusic I'd tend to think this is precisely the point people noting that Nate Silver is paid by Peter Thiel intend to make: that polls are crafted by someone who has interests, agendas, and, usually, financial commitments.

@ajaykaul10 One would think so. Yet the effect of the Trump era is to cause people who previously seemed willing to reassess some of their ideas (as Republicans) to dig in their heels and become only more entrenched, creating what's a big divide in the American political scene now.

@VE2UWY I've never warmed to him. Seeing that someone like Andrew Sullivan praises Silver to highest heaven was enough to make me back off and take a critical look at him quite a while in the past.

@JosephMeyer I would find it very, very hard to live amicably with such in-laws, I have to say. A first cousin cut me off after the 2016 election — because she's a fanatical Trump supporter — and I doubt we'll ever speak again. I was already alienated with other first cousins due to their politico-religious views. I cannot pretend, for the sake of "family" or peace or harmony to ignore what they stand for and what their votes portend for me as an openly gay man married to another man.

@wdlindsy Vance is the antithesis of what direction America must travel in. His fanatical philosophy about the role women play in society, his lies and disinformation, and the fact that he will literally say just about anything, without a shred of fact checking; shows the dangerous path he and Trump are leading America down.
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to Wrek Anthony last edited by
@politicalfinger I agree. Unfortunately, something approaching or even exceeding 40% of Americans want precisely what Vance is offering the nation. When they talk about taking America back, that's what they dream of.

@wdlindsy Thanks for the insight. Follow up question: Do you think once the GOP is past the Trump era, normalcy will be restored or is the damage irreparable?
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to Ajay last edited by
@ajaykaul10 My take: the GOP has not been normal from Reagan forward. Trump is the predictable outcome of an agenda and policies that some of the same Republicans now talking about returning their party to normal by ridding it of Trump willingly set into place. The party has much to reassess, including its blind faith in the "free" market as the end-all and be-all of economic life, and its willingnes over and over to promote white supremacist racism.

@hwarthog Many Americans definitely lean authoritarian. Robert P. Jones has provided some excellent commmetary/research on that point just today: https://toad.social/@wdlindsy/113132332713084839
