In a thread yesterday, I noted that after WWII, many Americans asked how it was possible that large numbers of Germans could hear Hitler's dangerous, crazy ranting targeting minority communities and lusting after blood and still support him.

@wdlindsy I'm not sure sometimes. They seem not to retain memory or context for their journalism.

@profdc9 I believe in civilization โ though that's a culturally loaded and often colonialistic term that I tend not to use โ but I believe what drives "civilization" forward is far more the amazing human tendency to collaborate and love. The chthonic and retrogressive urge to violence are always there, but it does not, in my view, move the human community forward. Rather the oppositeโฆ.

@wdlindsy Nate Silver is probably factoring in the number of votes that the #GroupiesOfPutin party intends to "suppress".

@wdlindsy Well, the current electoral map hardly looks conclusive. There are a lot of states in play right now: https://www.270towin.com/ This is using Nate Silver's data.

@cowvin Thanks for noting that.

The Good News Is:
I saw a clip of Thiel saying he is thinking of leaving the US if the Democrats win. Like picking up his family and moving is hard for a person with houses around the world (probably).
I often wonder why billionaires aren't joyful people. But I guess when you want EVERYBODY'S money there is no room for joy.

@Terypat "I often wonder why billionaires aren't joyful people." I love that statement. It seems to me something well worth pondering.

As a descendant of Eastern European Jews who immigrated to the U.S. and surely left behind others who were murdered by Nazis, and as a parent of a trans adult who likewise would have been murdered by Nazis, what should I think of my MAGA in-laws who seem like the kind who might have consented to the murder of my ancestors and my trans daughter if they had lived 85 years ago?

Mr Silver got "too big for his britches" many years ago. Did not know about the Thiel connection. Yuck.

@noondlyt I believe the point here is that Nate Silver is financially connected to Peter Thiel.

@wdlindsy Polls don't vote, voters do
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to ChasMusic (he/him) last edited by
@ChasMusic I'd tend to think this is precisely the point people noting that Nate Silver is paid by Peter Thiel intend to make: that polls are crafted by someone who has interests, agendas, and, usually, financial commitments.
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to Ajay last edited by
@ajaykaul10 One would think so. Yet the effect of the Trump era is to cause people who previously seemed willing to reassess some of their ideas (as Republicans) to dig in their heels and become only more entrenched, creating what's a big divide in the American political scene now.

@VE2UWY I've never warmed to him. Seeing that someone like Andrew Sullivan praises Silver to highest heaven was enough to make me back off and take a critical look at him quite a while in the past.

@JosephMeyer I would find it very, very hard to live amicably with such in-laws, I have to say. A first cousin cut me off after the 2016 election โ because she's a fanatical Trump supporter โ and I doubt we'll ever speak again. I was already alienated with other first cousins due to their politico-religious views. I cannot pretend, for the sake of "family" or peace or harmony to ignore what they stand for and what their votes portend for me as an openly gay man married to another man.
