Local email functionality

It's great that we have several 3rd party email plugins, but I think we need a working local email plugin. Ideally, its functionality should be Core or bundled. I know we have the Emailer (Local) plugin, but that has not been updated to work with the latest code.

What's the status of this? Can I just install some mail daemon on my server now and it sends out mails?

I couldn't find it in the docs

Third-party email server is still encouraged (e.g. Mandrill, PostageApp). I don't believe anybody uses the local email plugin, but I could be wrong!
