Where do people who self-host their websites, mastodon instances etc. actually host things these days?
(I gather from recent discussions here that Hetzner and DigitalOcean are villains now?)
-
@datarama mm, well, we use various cloud providers for various purposes but we do tend to use DigitalOcean a fair amount, problems notwithstanding, because they all have serious problems and DO is one of the few where we do not personally have any friends who are involved in labor or policy disputes with them
-
@ireneista DO is also where I currently host the dilapidated shell of my former web presence.
(me and a bunch of my old uni friends used to rent a machine at Hetzner together for our shared wiki and various other things ... about 20 years ago.)
-
@datarama my hosting is done on my own hardware in my house on a business grade FTTC broadband connection with a static IP from @aaisp , but this involved a lot of custom setup on my part to make a datacentre-like environment at home! I need some small VPSes, though, for backup NS/MX, so I'm interested to hear what you find...
-
@kitten_tech My needs are fairly modest - but my Internet connection is pretty poor (and anything better isn't available yet).
-
@datarama The @codeenigma instance is on AWS, not the cheapest option but reliable. Why are Hetzner villains? Just curious, think i missed a memo...
-
I do most of my hosting thru a nice provider in Finland called #Upcloud . They have been very good to me for several years.
For some things, I also use a Swiss company called #Infomaniaks ... also good, though their marketing push can be a bit, well, maniacal at times.
Generally speaking, any EU-based company should be good (what's wrong with Hetzner these days?), and particularly, there are many good, reliable companies out of Iceland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

@OpenBSDAms is perfect from this. It isn't owned by a larger entity - but one person doing it out of love and passion. You can find the backstory in multiple places, including this talk given at EuroBSDcon.
That person is not me - but someone whom I trust with my life.

@h3artbl33d @kitten_tech @datarama :flan_heart:

@kitten_tech In a few years I'll probably be able to get fibre too. Rollout is just pretty patchy here.

@greg_harvey @codeenigma The last couple of weeks I saw a lot of people here saying they'd arbitrarily shut down accounts. There was this, for example: https://ursal.zone/@Ursalzona/112259839960115911
I also saw (but haven't saved links) some accusations of them enabling homophobic abuse, but I don't know the up and down of that.

(I phrased it as a question because I don't *know* if they're villains now, that was just the tenor of the conversation on the bits of the fediverse I frequent the last few weeks.)

(My own experiences with Hetzner were positive, but also about 20 years ago.)
