i have zero doubt you guys are doing amazing #UI work
our problem of course is the centralized control #meta represents on content, with opaque algorithms. no doubt used to squash CSAM and right wing hate... but also anything outside facebook's plutocratic agenda
#centralized is dead. #decentralized is the future. it's why #threads exists at all reaching out to #mastodon
but meta will not eat us
we will eat you
Adam: leave the dark empire and join the free #fediverse my friend

embrace, extend, extinguish
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish
like #facebook did to #myspace
why can't @Gargron see that this is all that #meta is doing here with #threads?
maybe he does and has some tricks up his sleeve
god i hope so
i feel like #mastodon and the #fediverse are facing down a galactic armada in an old honda
if we bend meta to our will instead of the reverse, it will be a story for the ages

@benroyce mastodon themselves started doing it before meta....
Mastodon has proprietary features like Authorized Fetch that aren't an AP standard that other AP apps are having to adopt to be compatible...so gargon doesn't care because he's assisting in that endeavor...

I don't have a problem with that because this is the frontier, so of course you're going to get new functionality that isn't rolled up into a standard, yet. If we wait for standard bodies decentralized social media will beat centralized sometime around the year 2324. I think it makes sense functionality should come first, then it is standardized later. Waiting for standards bodies is not how you innovate.

@benroyce for sure, well currently, that's all they've been doing. They've been talking with W3C about adding support for things like blocking replies to posts and quote posts and blocking quote posts. But that's public info and of course they can be doing dodgy stuff behind the scenes

I know there's some backlash against Eugen on a number of issues but that's to be expected with any cutting edge community of misfits and anarchists. As long as we kill centralized social media I frankly don't give a fuck what Eugen does. If however he gives into the dark plutocrat empire that is meta, well...

@benroyce we can only wait and see. Unfortunately, us small fries are pretty powerless.
I even attempted to create a threads account to advocate for people there to turn it on. However, there's SO much fighting against it because they just don't know what it is and why it's a good thing. Also there's a "fake" Fediverse account there that some random guy from Hong Kong is using and is spreading false info about Fedi and when I notified threads employees about it, they followed the account.️
Therefore, I felt like my endeavor was useless and deleted my account. Then, I kept getting gaslit about it, telling me they don't think it's a problem....
If misinformation isn't a problem, them I don't want to know what a problem is...

holy shit!
couple things:
1. don't get discouraged, this whole topic is just beginning to heat up. roll up your sleeves and jump in, many many more twists and turns to come
2. turn to reporting. sorry if you already reported on the fake fediverse account and i missed it, but just spreading news on this issue is a big deal, thank you
3. enjoy the popcorn! drama wave forecast is high
4. let's kill centralized social media. tiktok, instagram, twitter: we need to KILL IT

@benroyce yeah. I reported it directly to the engineer that proceeded to follow the fediverse account 12 hours later, that's why I deleted my account.
I figured that doing advocating here to help new people get a grasp here and not get overwhelmed and leave, is a more fruitful endeavor than trying to fight the uneducated and misinformation there.

@BeAware just remember a follow is not an endorsement. the engineer could be following the fake just to collect intel

@benroyce ️the account is still there over 30 days later so I won't be holding my breath. https://www.threads.net/@fediverse

a downside to decentralized: since no one "owns" anything, anyone can be anyone, like the "anonymous" hackers can put out all sorts of announcements because anyone can pretend to be anonymous
if there is major scandalous misinfo from that account, it needs to be made an example of though, socially

@benroyce I tried. The last replies the account made were to me and a Pakistani user asking why Fediverse wasn't enabled on their account. They proceeded to tell them how the internet infrastructure in Pakistan can't support regular internet usage....which obviously isn't an issue because the user is ON the internet. The reason they can't use Fediverse is cause Threads is limiting it by country for now.️
My replies and discourse with them aren't there cause I deleted my account, but their posts are still there.

@BeAware you are deep dive eyes and ears. keep at it. there are bombs out there, waiting to go off. you're like an advance scout in a war. a war just getting started

@[email protected] @[email protected] just clearing something up, Authorized Fetch is the Mastodon name for requiring HTTP Signatures for retrieving content, even public content.
However, you already did the hard work once to sort out http signatures for publishing content, sending one to retrieve content is trivial by comparison. It took me 5 minutes.
Right now the rationale behind using it is mainly about protecting publicly visible content from being consumed by blocked servers, which is actually a side effect of the feature. There's more potential in supporting it because it then allows fine-grained access over who gets to see a resource (think private groups, DMs, etc.)
