What mode of transportation did you use for your last trip of about 250km?

@evan I drove to Ohio Linux Fest in Columbus OH, about 880km each way. No train service. Would have been bus or plane. However, I enjoy driving and have a fun (but practical) car. If train had been available, and reasonable, I would have taken it.

@evan I live in Alberta so for that distance car is mostly the only option. Also for that distance the most likely thing we’d be doing would be going camping and it would be hard to get the tent trailer onto a train.
Of note, in a rare bit of possible sanity, the Alberta government is developing a passenger rail plan for the province so maybe before my time is up they’ll build something.

It's actually cheaper for me to drive from here to Toronto (250ish km) than to get a train.
When I was working in TO I used to drive to Scarborough and catch the Go train downtown. It just wasn't viable to take rail all the way. -

For me, a trip of 250km is going to be juuuuuuuust a little bit outside my urban region. It's a good weekend or 3-day weekend trip. We have a country house about 135km away, so that's my benchmark. There's a train station nearby, but it's hard to get from the station to our home, so we only take the train if someone else is already at the house. Ottawa is about 200km away, but about the same feel; I usually take the train.

@evan I haven't done a 250 km trip in a while; many shorter than that, and a few much longer.
If you're asking what I would normally do for a trip shorter than Montréal/Toronto, the answer is almost certainly drive.

For me, it's car (EV). We have a house in the Eastern Townships that's about 135km from our home in Montreal. We can take the train to Drummondville, about 20 minutes away by car, but that only works if someone is already in the house to come pick you up.

@evan Last trip was from Victoria to Vancouver; 252 km there and back again. 92km by ferry (diesel), and 160km by car (electric).
