What mode of transportation did you use for your last trip of about 250km?
-
@evan I live in Europe and train is probably the case for those kinds of trips 9/10. I borrow a car if we're going to the woods a bunch of people together.

@evan I drove to Ohio Linux Fest in Columbus OH, about 880km each way. No train service. Would have been bus or plane. However, I enjoy driving and have a fun (but practical) car. If train had been available, and reasonable, I would have taken it.

@evan I live in Alberta so for that distance car is mostly the only option. Also for that distance the most likely thing we’d be doing would be going camping and it would be hard to get the tent trailer onto a train.
Of note, in a rare bit of possible sanity, the Alberta government is developing a passenger rail plan for the province so maybe before my time is up they’ll build something.

@malte the question isn't about how you regularly travel or how you want to travel, but about how you took your last trip.
-
@mpjgregoire and 1100 ~ 250 for you?
-
@gombang that's "other"!

@murph so, you'd say 1760km is about 250km?

@Chigaze so, what was your last trip of this distance?

@evan
My mistake, I was thinking "at least" 250km. I didn't think it was that specific. -

@evan I'll delete my reply if it messes things up. I need to keep my damned mouth shut more often.

@evan
It's actually cheaper for me to drive from here to Toronto (250ish km) than to get a train.
When I was working in TO I used to drive to Scarborough and catch the Go train downtown. It just wasn't viable to take rail all the way. -

@murph It doesn't mess anything up! I'm just asking.
For me, a trip of 250km is going to be juuuuuuuust a little bit outside my urban region. It's a good weekend or 3-day weekend trip. We have a country house about 135km away, so that's my benchmark. There's a train station nearby, but it's hard to get from the station to our home, so we only take the train if someone else is already at the house. Ottawa is about 200km away, but about the same feel; I usually take the train.
-
@silvermoon82 It's kind of bullshit here. I think train tickets should be as cheap as driving.

@evan Sorry about the self-harshness of this, I've been having a rough time lately.
-
@evan I haven't done a 250 km trip in a while; many shorter than that, and a few much longer.
If you're asking what I would normally do for a trip shorter than Montréal/Toronto, the answer is almost certainly drive.

@murph I hear you, no problem.
-
@evan I think you should clarify you're thinking of 250 km round trip.
-
@mpjgregoire yeah, I think a trip to Boston or Toronto is different from a trip to Sherbrooke or Ottawa.

For me, it's car (EV). We have a house in the Eastern Townships that's about 135km from our home in Montreal. We can take the train to Drummondville, about 20 minutes away by car, but that only works if someone is already in the house to come pick you up.
