@wdlindsy I grew up hearing "and that's the way it is" when he finished each night.

@wdlindsy look, if they couldn't stay off the train after January 6th why should we expect a little Hitler envy to get them off the Trump train?

@davidmiller I don't read any of the commentators in the thread to be imagining that those cultists will jump from the Trump train. That's not why they're sounding the alarm. They're sounding it because it's the right thing to do.

@thomastraynor Same here. We often listened to him as we ate our family supper in silence; our table for everyday meals (as distinguished from holiday meals in the dining room) was in our den in front of the t.v. He shaped my idea of what a good, honorable journalist is all about!

@Abelle Same for my family. Ditto for Roger Mudd and Dan Rather.

@MiriShuli He was another good one β and Molly Ivins, though her mΓ©tier was the pen and not the microphone. I miss them all!

@phaedral Indeed. I'll never forget my shock and disgust at seeing a Trump sign go up in the yard of a neighbor the very day after that story broke. I totally lost any respect for the people living in that house at that point.

@IveyJanette I know so little about the history of the LA Times, that I'm not sure I'm really understanding what you mean. You mean they're cheering Garza?

@phaedral I agree.

William Lindsey :toad:replied to Philip Cardella on last edited by
@philip_cardella Yes. Along those lines, after seeing the film Moffie last year, I got ahold of the book on which the film is based, and found the story it tells of the confluence of deep racism, religion, and toxic masculinity in South African white culture β a story told by an insider β very disturbing. But also very true-sounding.

@JosephMeyer Thanks so much for letting me know they're worthwhile. I share your exhaustion and commiserate with you. I try to maintain hope, but by nature, I tend to be a more glass-half-empty personality than an optimistic one. It's trueling.

William Lindsey :toad:replied to Cat Herder π π½ πΊπ² on last edited by
@CatHerder Yes, I remember not sleeping at all that night. It was like a truck had rolled over me. On social media, I kept encountering people living in places unlike my deep red little state dominated by white evangelicals who were laughing and mocking and thinking Trump was a joke and couldn't possibly win. I knew better, but even so, was deeply shocked at the outcome, even though I expected him to win.

@zachvat Yes, a good point. I myself haven't watched news on t.v. or streamed on my computer for a very long time. It's just no longer how I absorb news, though that was the norm when I was growing up, along with newspapers, of which my family always took two daily.
