Welp. It's official. #Redis is no longer #OSS While I wasn't a contributor to the core, I presented on it dozens of times, talked to thousands, and wrote a book about it.I probably wouldn't have done any of that with that kind of license.Very disappoin...

Fork them!

@linux_mclinuxface So I read this RSAL thingy and this one struck me:
"You may not make the functionality of the Software or a Modified version available to third parties as a service or distribute the Software or a Modified version in a manner that makes the functionality of the Software available to third parties."So I may not distribute a modified version that makes the software available to 3rd parties.. does this mean that forking redis is illegal???

@ThunderComplex @linux_mclinuxface You can still use it as a private backend for anything. You can still fork the most recent code and modify, but you can’t sell your changes. You can still use your fork in your own projects in normal use which can make money.
It means code contributors cannot make financial gain from their future submissions to redis, unless the company allows it in a new agreement. Previous code contributions can still be used to make a profit using older versions

@linux_mclinuxface That's a License? Looks like something in my OpenSSL config.

@linux_mclinuxface seems like a problem for mastodon, cc @Gargron (redis changing to non-oss)

@doboprobodyne KeyDB might be something to look at. https://docs.keydb.dev/

@linux_mclinuxface @yawnbox it's already an optional problem for Mastodon, which is developed against Elasticsearch 7 for full-text search. the Docker compose file references 7.14 in a commented-out section, which is after they changed the license in 7.11.
(anecdotally, i've had no trouble using the OpenSearch fork with Mastodon instead of ES proper. ZincSearch was missing too many APIs to work.)

@vyr no worries! It’s just funny.
-
@hexbatch @ThunderComplex @linux_mclinuxface It also means it's no longer going to be included in your favorite Linux distro out of box any more and a headache for all the OSS stuff built around it. Please don't minimize the impact and good will burned by stuff like this, especially for those who volunteered their time and energy in good faith that this wouldn't happen.
-
@linux_mclinuxface What about forking what has already been released under a non-proprietary license?
-
@daltux that can be done. (It’s harder than it sounds.)

Redis has been sponsoring the bulk of development alongside a dynamic community of developers eager to contribute. However, the majority of Redis’ commercial sales are channeled through the largest cloud service providers, who commoditize Redis’ investments and its open source community

Oh... you're working for the company causing all the issues... -

Amazon is sucking up all the good will and hard work of open source projects, giving nothing in return, and companies are getting sick of it, no surprises here

@linux_mclinuxface a downturn in the industry really erased a lot of goodwill but exposed an issue with the business models of opencore/freemium. lots of projects got founded on the basis that they would launch off a foss codebase and “turn on the profit” later on (somehow). Now I’m seeing quite a few scramble to close up their code. I’m not pushing patches anymore, just writing my crappy projects.
