@[email protected] at least with CF I think there was always meant to be an end date as Wildebeest was meant to be proof of concept for their cloud hosting infra.

@julian it was a tech demo for cloudflare as a service. it honestly never got past proof-of-concept stage. last i remember, it used to show DMs on the public timeline.

@Tondoni CloudFlare didn't even try Mastodon. The way they marketed Wildebeest made it appear like they wanted to go into direct competition with Mastodon and a whole lot of other non-commercial Fediverse projects and siphon off private data of Fediverse users. They particularly went for people who wanted to run their own instances.

It's funny. The fediverse was started over a decade ago before Mastodon and ActivityPub even existed. The bleeding edge. And now people are taking notice, including big players. But it is still cutting edge technology. Not everyone has the patience or passion it takes to develop cutting edge technologies. And those who are looking for financial gain are often the first to give up because it takes time. And they often get it wrong since they're to focused on the monetary gain than the functionality.
